Effect of bedding plane on mechanical properties, failure mode, and crack evolution characteristic of bedded rock-like specimen

Hanxiang Liu et al.

Summary: An experimental test was conducted to study the influence of bedding planes on mechanical properties and failure characteristics of rock-like specimens. It was found that the increase in bedding angle led to a decrease and then an increase in uniaxial compression strength and failure strain. The presence of bedding planes also changed the failure mode and fracture process of the specimens. Numerical models confirmed the effects of orientation angle, spacing, and strength of bedding planes on the failure characteristics.

Mechanical Characteristics and Mechanism of Granite Subjected to Coupling Effect of Acidic Corrosion and Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Suran Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mechanical performance and mechanisms of rock masses under the coupling action of acidic environments and freeze-thaw cycles. Speculations regarding the performance of granite rock masses under these conditions were developed based on test results, and were confirmed through X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The identification of the white crumb-like substance as SiO2 gel was also confirmed in this study.

Influence of high temperatures on physical properties and microstructure of gneiss

K. O. B. Costa et al.

Summary: The study showed that heat treatment significantly affected the physical properties and microstructure of mylonitic gneiss, leading to a decrease in compressive strength and wave propagation after treatment. Thermal expansion of mineral phases contributed to the appearance of microcracks and the formation of new pores with increased heat treatment temperatures. Furthermore, the strength of the specimens exhibited different trends when compressed under different conditions.
