Synergic Effects of Bed Materials and Catalytic Filter Candle for the Conversion of Tar during Biomass Steam Gasification

Alessandro Antonio Papa et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the integration of a pilot-scale gasifier unit with a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). Experimental tests were conducted to determine the optimal operating conditions for gasification and gas cleaning. A combination of a ceramic filter candle filled with catalyst and olivine and dolomite as the bed materials yielded the best results in terms of gas composition and gas yield. The use of a metallic filter candle increased the residence time of the gas in the catalytic bed and reduced the content of toluene and naphthalene below the limits for safe operation of the SOFC.

The Effect of Pyrolysis Temperature and the Source Biomass on the Properties of Biochar Produced for the Agronomical Applications as the Soil Conditioner

Michal Kalina et al.

Summary: Biochar is an organic material that can improve soil fertility and plant growth. The properties of biochar are influenced by production conditions and the origin of the biomass. Biochar samples produced at different temperatures and residence times have similar structural features, but the physicochemical properties of the original biomass differ. Higher pyrolysis temperature results in lower yield but higher organic carbon content and surface area.

Numerical Simulation of an Improved Updraft Biomass Gasifier Based on Aspen Plus

Fugang Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a numerical investigation and optimization on an improved updraft gasifier, overcoming the weaknesses of conventional updraft gasifiers. Using the comprehensive Aspen Plus model based on RYield and RCSTR reactors, a tar prediction model is constructed to determine tar yield. The simulation results of Aspen Plus match well with experimental results for product yields and gasification efficiency, demonstrating the accuracy of the model. The study confirms that the improved gasifier has a much lower tar content in the syngas compared to the conventional one. The inflection point of gasification efficiency occurs when the air ratio is 0.25, and the optimum steam proportion in the air is 7.5%. This comprehensive investigation provides essential information for the optimal design and operation of the improved updraft gasifier.
