A Nonlinear Control Framework for Optimal Load-Sharing and Voltage Containment in DC Networks

Babak Abdolmaleki et al.

Summary: This letter proposes a general nonlinear control framework for load-sharing and voltage containment of dispatchable generators in dc networks. It covers centralized, distributed, and decentralized control techniques and provides a unified perspective. The framework formulates the control objective as a steady state optimization problem and derives the KKT conditions. A nonlinear integral controller is proposed to drive the system towards a steady state where the KKT conditions are satisfied and the voltages stay within limits. Different model-free methods are proposed for obtaining the integral set-point based on the optimality conditions. The effectiveness of the proposal is verified through MATLAB-based simulations.

Optimal sizing design and integrated cost-benefit assessment of stand-alone microgrid system with different energy storage employing chameleon swarm algorithm: A rural case in Northeast China

Jianguo Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an optimal sizing design and cost-benefit evaluation framework for stand-alone renewable microgrid system to serve rural community load usage in Northeast China. The microgrid system combines Photovoltaic arrays (PV), Wind turbines (WT), Tidal turbines (Tid), Battery (Bat) storage and hydrogen storage, respectively. The optimal component sizing is determined based on the actual local hourly meteorological data and load demand during a year using Chameleon swarm algorithm (CSA), with minimum Total net present cost (TNPC) of the microgrid system as the optimization objective and the reliability constraint is considered as Loss of power supply probability (LPSP). Meanwhile, a cost-benefit index is further introduced to conveniently evaluate the overall effectiveness of the microgrid systems. The results of the simulation experiments under the benchmark scenario reveal that the PV/WT/Tid/Bat system is the most viable approach for local load supply among different versions of the microgrid. Additionally, a thorough sensitivity investigation of the optimal sizing of two exemplary microgrid systems based on different energy storage is carried out under different technoeconomic scenarios. This study can provide a more efficient and clean electrification scheme and insightful reference for investment in the power-starved Northeast China.

Comprehensive Low Voltage Microgrid Planning Methodology for Rural Electrification

Kimsrornn Khon et al.

Summary: DC-powered devices require AC/DC converters to connect to the grid, raising the question of operating part of the grid in DC. This study proposes a low voltage microgrid planning tool for electrification in developing countries, considering AC/DC distribution, optimal topology, and distributed energy resources allocation. The tool is illustrated on a real case study, showing the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed algorithm. The results indicate that a hybrid AC/DC microgrid allows gradual electrification without large initial investments.

Optimal Placement and Sizing of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in a Grid-Tied DC Microgrid Using Modified TLBO Method

Nandini K. Krishnamurthy et al.

Summary: In this study, a DC microgrid consisting of a solar photovoltaic, wind power system, and fuel cells is interconnected with the utility grid. The optimal sizing and positioning of electric vehicle charging stations and renewable energy sources are simultaneously determined to minimize their negative impact on the distribution network's operational parameters. The location problem is presented as a multi-objective optimization, considering voltage stability, reliability, power loss index, and cost as objective functions. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through simulations on modified IEEE 33 and 123-bus radial distribution systems.

Distributed Control and Optimization of DC Microgrids: A Port-Hamiltonian Approach

Babak Abdolmaleki et al.

Summary: This article proposes a distributed secondary control scheme for driving a dc microgrid to an equilibrium point where generators share optimal currents and their voltages have a weighted average of nominal value. The proposed control scheme guarantees plug-and-play design and functionality of generators. The effectiveness of the scheme is validated through different case studies using a test microgrid system simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and OPAL-RT environments.

Yusuf Gupta et al.

Summary: Unequal reactive power sharing amongst distributed generators in a droop based microgrid is a significant concern, and this article proposes a mixed-integer linear programming problem to achieve proportional reactive power sharing while maintaining low line losses. Optimal sizing and placement of DGs are investigated, along with day-ahead dispatch and network reconfiguration for improved performance. Testing on a 33 bus network validates the accuracy and utility of the proposed method.

DC Microgrid Planning, Operation, and Control: A Comprehensive Review

Fahad Saleh Al-Ismail

Summary: In recent years, the importance of DC microgrids has been increasing due to the wide utilization of DC power sources. Unlike conventional AC systems, DC microgrids do not have synchronization and harmonics issues, but controlling voltage and power-sharing remains a challenge. Different control techniques are needed to ensure secure operation, and detailed research on planning, operation, and control is lacking.
