Pyrolysis characteristics and microstructure evolution of different coal types

Yanpeng Chen et al.

Summary: Coal pyrolysis characteristics of different coal grades were studied through thermal simulation tests and analysis of pore structure and gas products. The results showed that Inner Mongolia lignite had the highest gas production, making it the most favorable for gasification. The research results provide experimental guidance for underground coal gasification.

Current status and technology development in implementing low carbon emission energy on underground coal gasification (UCG)

Shadrack Adjei Takyi et al.

Summary: Although coal mining has played a significant role in global development, its environmental impact offsets its value. The shift to net-zero CO2 emissions presents opportunities for new coal technological models. This paper reviews the current status and technology development of underground coal gasification for low carbon emission energy, discussing its modern stage, pilot operations, and market developments.

Experimental simulations of methane-oriented underground coal gasification using hydrogen- The effect of coal rank and gasification pressure on the hydrogasification process

Krzysztof Kapusta et al.

Summary: This paper presents a series of surface experimental simulations of methane-oriented underground coal gasification using hydrogen as gasification medium. The experiments demonstrated that the physicochemical properties of coal considerably affect the hydrogasification process and the feasibility of methane-rich gas production was initially demonstrated. However, further techno-economic studies are necessary to assess the economic feasibility of methane production using this process.

Storing carbon dioxide in deep unmineable coal seams for centuries following underground coal gasification

Liangliang Jiang et al.

Summary: Underground coal gasification (UCG) has great potential in extracting energy from deep coal seams with low environmental impact. CO2 storage in post-UCG cavities was found to be stable and effective. The findings will promote the application of UCG in deep coal seams worldwide and facilitate the transition of the coal industry towards carbon-consciousness.

Study on pyrolysis behavior of the coal fractions based on macro maceral separation

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: This paper separated sub-bituminous coal into maceral-rich fractions using float-sink method and evaluated the low temperature pyrolysis behavior of the fractions. The study found that the enriched fractions had different characteristics with varying proportions of vitrinite, inertinite, and minerals. The tar yields and compositions of the enriched fractions also showed distinct differences, indicating the potential for staged utilization of sub-bituminous coal.

Online characterization of pyrolysis products and kinetics study for the pyrolysis of a coal

Guo Yu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the compositional distribution of gaseous products generated from the pyrolysis of two low-rank coals, considering the effects of heating rate and temperature. Results showed that oxygen-containing compounds in coal were the first to participate in pyrolysis reactions, with aromatic hydrocarbons increasing in content with temperature, while aliphatic hydrocarbons and oxygenates decreased. High yields of H-2 and low yields of CO2 were observed in the major pyrolysis gases. Activation energies of pyrolysis gases were calculated, and possible generation pathways of gaseous products were proposed.

Influence of scale and atmosphere on the pyrolysis properties of large-scale bituminous coal

Zhe Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the scale and atmosphere have a significant impact on the pyrolysis characteristics of coal, with large-scale bituminous coal pyrolysis being significantly influenced by inner and outer temperatures. The production rate of pyrolysis tar is higher in CO2, and the specific surface area and pore volume of pyrolysis coke are significantly increased with scale in CO2.

Comparative environmental benefits of power generation from underground and surface coal gasification with carbon capture and storage

Ye Feng et al.

Summary: This study assessed the environmental impacts of UGCC with and without CCS through life cycle assessment, revealing that UGCC power plants have lower mid-point impact values but higher global warming potential compared to IGCC power plants. Additionally, UGCC power plants show superior end-point environmental benefits, but the implementation of CCS may result in an increase in damage to ecosystem quality and resources.
