Quantitative analysis of the kinematics and induced aerodynamic loading of individual vortices in vortex-dominated flows: A computation and data-driven approach

Karthik Menon et al.

Summary: This study presents a physics-based data-driven computational framework for quantitative analysis of vortex kinematics and vortex-induced loads in vortex-dominated flows. By combining clustering methods with mathematical partitioning, detailed analysis of vortex dynamics and aerodynamic loads is enabled, providing insights into the flow characteristics and the role of vortices in driving aeroelastic oscillations.

Influence of turbulence intensity on vortex pattern for a rigid cylinder with turbulence stimulation in flow induced oscillations

Dahai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of ambient turbulence intensity on the flow-induced oscillations of rigid circular cylinders with symmetric and asymmetric local turbulence stimulation. Different vortex patterns are observed under varying freestream turbulence intensity, with low turbulence leading to multi-vortex patterns at high Reynolds numbers and high turbulence resulting in elongated vortex patterns due to fewer separations of shed vortices.

Unsupervised clustering and performance prediction of vortex wakes from bio-inspired propulsors

Alejandro G. Calvet et al.

Summary: An unsupervised machine learning strategy has been developed to cluster vortex wakes of bio-inspired propulsors into groups with similar performance metrics. Through simulations of 121 unique kinematics, it was found that the Strouhal number has the strongest influence on thrust coefficient, while the relative angle of attack has the most significant impact on propulsive efficiency. This automated clustering has the potential to identify complex vorticity patterns in wakes and modes of propulsion that may not be easily discerned using traditional classification methods.

The wake of a transversely oscillating circular cylinder in a flowing soap film at low Reynolds number

Wenchao Yang et al.

Summary: An inclined gravity-driven soap film channel was used to study the wake patterns formed behind a transversely oscillating cylinder at Re = 235 +/- 14. Different synchronized and unsynchronized wake modes were observed under varying oscillation frequencies, with a strong resemblance to previous three-dimensional experimental results.
