Numerical Study of Spray-Induced Turbulence Using Industrial Fire-Mitigation Nozzles

Guodong Gai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spray-induced turbulence generated from industrial spray nozzles through numerical simulations to better understand its role in fires or explosions. The validation of the polydisperse model for predicting gas and droplet velocities is crucial, and the distribution characteristics of turbulent kinetic energy and integral length scale inside and outside the spray cone are examined.

Phenomenology of a two-phase laminar flame interacting with a heated cylinder

Olivier Thomine et al.

Summary: In this study, the numerical investigation of the interaction between a two-phase laminar flame and a heated cylinder reveals the significant importance of the Stokes number on droplet segregation. The evaporation of droplets near the cylinder changes the gas mixtures, and droplets with small Stokes numbers show weak evaporation capacity on the cylinder surface. Additionally, fuel gas density increases with higher Stokes numbers leading to flame detachment.

Dynamics of small heavy particles in homogeneous turbulence: a Lagrangian experimental study

Tim Berk et al.

Summary: The study investigates the settling behavior of microscopic heavy particles in homogeneous air turbulence. It finds that the particle settling velocity is enhanced proportionally to the turbulence velocity scale, gravity and inertia reduce particle velocity fluctuations and have competing effects on particle acceleration. Additionally, preferential sampling of high-strain/low-vorticity regions increases particle pair dispersion, but gravity offsets this effect.

Direct numerical simulation of bubble-induced turbulence

Alessio Innocenti et al.

Summary: The study investigates bubble-induced turbulence through numerical simulations, comparing results with experiments and previous simulations to assess the accuracy of the model. Analysis reveals that the energy transfer mechanisms and potential cascades are unveiled through a local scale-by-scale analysis in physical space.
