Evaluating the environmental and economic sustainability of energy from anaerobic digestion of different feedstocks in Turkey

Gulizar Balcioglu et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion of organic wastes is a promising solution to reduce GHG emissions and provide multiple benefits. This study evaluates the environmental and economic sustainability of heat and power produced through AD of different types of waste in Turkey. The results show that using feedstocks with high solid content and biogas yield leads to lower environmental impacts, while bioenergy from cattle slurry has higher impacts. The credits from displacement of mineral fertilisers offset most impacts, and the costs of energy conversion are lower compared to natural gas and grid electricity.

Enhancement of Food Waste Management and Its Environmental Consequences

Jan den Boer et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the potential environmental effects of optimizing kitchen waste management in Opole by improving separate collection and diverting collected waste to anaerobic digestion. The positive impacts on European and Polish goals include increasing renewable energy supply, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing waste recycling. Life cycle assessment shows clear environmental benefits in various impact categories, mainly through avoided emissions from biogas combustion. Optimization can lead to significant CO2 savings, especially if cleaner energy sources are chosen.
