Alternative vehicular fuels for environmental decarbonization: A critical review of challenges in using electricity, hydrogen, and biofuels as a sustainable vehicular fuel

Bhanu Prakash Sandaka et al.

Summary: Using vehicles powered by alternative fuels is considered an ideal way to reduce vehicular emissions, but it raises questions about resource availability, risks, and end-of-life fate. Battery-powered and fuel cell vehicles are zero-emission, but they face challenges such as resource scarcity, infrastructure limitations, and high costs. Biofuels can be used in existing vehicles, but procuring feedstock and addressing food-versus-fuel issues remain challenging. Overcoming these challenges is crucial for the sustained use of alternative fuels, and this work provides a comprehensive assessment for researchers and policymakers to make informed decisions towards achieving the goals of the Paris agreement.

When, where and how can the electrification of passenger cars reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

R. Sacchi et al.

Summary: This paper introduces carculator, a Python library for conducting environmental life cycle assessments of passenger vehicles. The results show that current battery electric vehicles perform better than gasoline-powered vehicles in most of the countries considered. In the future, electricity-based synthetic fuels have the potential to reduce climate impacts through decarbonization, but limited renewable resources pose a challenge.
