Carbon Shell on Active Nanocatalyst for Stable Electrocatalysis

Ji Mun Yoo et al.

Summary: Electrocatalysis is essential for renewable energy conversion and fuel production in future energy systems. Various nanostructures have been explored to enhance electrocatalytic activity, but ensuring long-term stability of electrocatalysts is crucial for reliable energy device operation. The challenge lies in achieving both high activity and robust stability simultaneously, as the structure-property relationships affecting activity and stability differ. Introducing functional structural units into catalyst design is essential to achieve electrochemical stability while maintaining high activity.

Caveats in the Use of Tertiary Butyl Alcohol as a Probe for Hydroxyl Radical Involvement in Conventional Ozonation and Catalytic Ozonation Processes

Shikha Garg et al.

Summary: This study highlights the limitations of using tert-butanol (TBA) to determine the contribution of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) in organic oxidation processes. The findings suggest that TBA cannot access surface-located (OH)-O-center dot formed during certain oxidation processes, and it can interfere with the adsorption and removal of organics on the catalyst surface. The presence of TBA may also affect the stability of ozone and promote direct oxidation of ozone-reactive organics or surface-mediated oxidation. Caution should be exercised when interpreting observations in the presence of TBA, and further experimentation is needed to confirm/reject the role of (OH)-O-center dot in organic oxidation.
