Unveiling the Impact of the Cations and Anions in Ionic Liquid/Glyme Hybrid Electrolytes for Na-O2 Batteries

Laura Garcia-Quintana et al.

Summary: A series of hybrid electrolytes composed of diglyme and ionic liquids have been investigated for Na-O-2 batteries. Different chemical compositions of the ILs affect the size, purity, and distribution of the discharge products. By controlling the physicochemical properties of the electrolyte and the speciation of Na+ and superoxide radical anion, the nucleation and growth phenomena, as well as electrolyte stability, can be optimized to improve battery performance.

Driving the sodium-oxygen battery chemistry towards the efficient formation of discharge products: The importance of sodium superoxide quantification

Marina Enterria et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the discharge efficiency of two graphene-based cathodes in sodium-oxygen batteries and investigates the discharge products formed on the cathode surface. It is found that NaO2 is the main discharge product regardless of the cathode material, with small amounts of side-products detected. The study accurately quantifies the yield of NaO2 using X-ray diffraction and reveals the impact of discharge depth on battery efficiency.

Tunable multi-doped carbon nanofiber air cathodes based on a poly(ionic liquid) for sodium oxygen batteries with diglyme/ionic liquid-based hybrid electrolytes

Han Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of multi-doped hierarchical fibrous network structures were synthesized as binder-free self-standing cathodes for Na-O-2 batteries. The use of poly(ionic liquid) and polyacrylonitrile as co-precursors played a crucial role in tuning the morphology and electrocatalytic activity of carbon nanofibers. The multi-doping and synergetic effect of different configurations in the air cathodes enhanced the oxygen reduction process. The resulting air cathodes showed excellent long-term cycling performance and achieved the highest reported discharge capacity for N-doped carbon-based air cathodes.

Unveiling the Impact of the Cations and Anions in Ionic Liquid/Glyme Hybrid Electrolytes for Na-O-2 Batteries

Laura Garcia-Quintana et al.

Summary: Hybrid electrolytes composed of diglyme and ionic liquids were investigated for Na-O-2 batteries to control the growth and purity of discharge products. The chemical composition of ILs significantly affects the morphology and composition of discharge products, with the electrolyte properties and Na+ speciation playing crucial roles. The use of pyrrolidinium IL with a linear alkyl chain resulted in smaller discharge particle sizes and higher Coulombic efficiency in long-term cycling of Na-O-2 batteries.
