Relationship between the Resistivity Profiles Obtained from the Power Law Model and the Physico-Chemical Properties of Passive Films

S. Marcelin et al.

Summary: The power law model was utilized to analyze the constant-phase-element behavior of passive films, allowing the variation of resistivity with passive film thickness to be obtained. A methodology for analyzing impedance diagrams was described to avoid the need for numerous unknown parameters in the model. The dielectric properties of passive films and the duplex character of these layers were discussed, illustrating the contribution of inner dense oxide and outer hydroxide layers to the resistivity profiles. Additionally, information on the evolution of passive film behavior on 316L stainless steel under irradiation was provided as an example.

Investigating the Role of Mo and Cr during the Activation and Passivation of Ni-Based Alloys in Acidic Chloride Solution

Jeffrey D. Henderson et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing Mo content can improve the alloy's ability to recover from surface activation, leading to quicker and more stable spontaneous passivation for Mo-rich alloys. During electrochemically-assisted passivation, some Mo was removed and Cr oxides accumulated at the surface, but the barrier layer properties were not dictated by Cr content.

Effects of reducing atmospheres of bright annealing on the surface and corrosion characteristics of super duplex stainless steel tubes

Jin Sung Park et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of gas composition in bright annealing reducing atmospheres on the surface and corrosion characteristics of super duplex stainless steel tubes. The findings showed that the addition of N-2 resulted in increased [N] pick up on the surface and decreased corrosion resistance. Additionally, annealing in 100% H-2 at 1100 degrees C led to the formation of cracks with phase transformation to e-martensite, affecting the corrosion resistance of the samples.

Oxygen injection during fast vs slow passivation in aqueous solution

Xiao-Xiang Yu et al.

Summary: The typical defect reactions at the metal/oxide interface explaining the growth and breakdown of passive oxide films in corrosion include the creation of metal and oxygen vacancies. This study introduces a new mechanism of oxygen injection into the metal, with fast passivation in the NiCr alloy showing a significant oxygen injection at a fast growth rate. The addition of Mo promotes the formation of the corundum phase in the outer oxide layer for NiCrMo, changing the transport mechanism of oxygen through the oxide film and across the metal/oxide interface.
