High-throughput exploration of activity and stability for identifying photoelectrochemical water splitting materials

Ken J. Jenewein et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of considering both activity and stability metrics in high-throughput experiments. By using an automated PEC scanning flow cell coupled to a PEC-ICP-MS, the interrelation between composition, photocurrent density, and element-specific dissolution in an Fe-Ti-W-O thin film materials library was revealed.

Electrocatalytic oxidation of 2-propanol on PtxIr100-x bifunctional electrocatalysts - A thin-film materials library study

Attila Kormanyos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the composition-dependent activity and stability of PtxIr100-x alloy electrocatalysts for the electro-oxidation of isopropanol using a high-throughput electrochemical approach. Results show that samples with lower Ir content exhibit higher activity, with decreasing current densities as the amount of Ir increases. Additionally, the presence of isopropanol significantly increases the stability of PtxIr100-x alloys.

Different promoting roles of ruthenium for the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols on PtRu electrocatalysts

Iosif Mangoufis-Giasin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates significant differences in the oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols, with the former being affected by blocking adsorbates and the latter by energetics of elementary reaction steps. Ruthenium plays a different role in the electrooxidation of primary and secondary alcohols on bimetallic catalysts, enhancing oxidation through a bifunctional mechanism for primary alcohols and stabilizing intermediates for secondary alcohols.

Structural evolution of a PtRu catalyst in the oxidation of an organic molecule

Jonathan E. Mueller et al.

Summary: Surface phase diagrams based on density functional theory calculations are used to identify stable surface phases during the oxidation of fuel-cell-relevant organic compounds on Pt-Ru catalysts. The presence of adsorbed CO and O triggers changes in the local structure and composition of the metal alloy's surface under operando conditions. A Ru-rich Pt-Ru surface stabilizes the mixed CO-O adsorbate phases, contributing to stable and efficient catalyst operation as confirmed by operando X-ray absorption spectra (XAS).

The 2-Propanol Fuel Cell: A Review from the Perspective of a Hydrogen Energy Economy

Matthew Brodt et al.

Summary: The 2-propanol fuel cell offers advantages over methanol fuel cells in terms of high voltage, reduced fuel crossover, and a benign toxicological fuel profile. Recent research has shown compatibility between 2-propanol fuel cells and LOHC systems, which can avoid high energy costs associated with dehydrogenation in hydrogen LOHC logistics.

Impact of catalyst loading, ionomer content, and carbon support on the performance of direct isopropanol fuel cells

Pascal Hauenstein et al.

Summary: The study shows that increasing the anode catalyst loading significantly improves the performance in direct isopropanol fuel cells, while the cathode loading for the oxygen reduction reaction has a minor impact on performance. Additionally, optimizing ionomer content and utilizing high surface area carbon support can enhance the performance of DIFCs.
