Reducing intrinsic drawbacks of Ni-rich layered oxide with a multifunctional materials dry-coating strategy

Nichakarn Anansuksawat et al.

Summary: In this study, a multifunctional dry coating strategy was introduced on LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) with a thickness of approximately 100 nm at 1 wt%. The coating included high chemical stable Al2O3 (0.33 wt%) to reduce parasitic reactions, high electrical carbon black (0.33 wt%) to reduce internal charge transfer resistance, and high ionic conductive Li7La3Zr2O12 (0.33 wt%) to enhance Li+ diffusion. The coated NMC811 exhibited improved stability, achieving 1000 cycles with 80% capacity retention, compared to the pristine NMC811 with only 39% capacity retention. It also demonstrated a two-fold specific capacity at a high C-rate (2.0C) and excellent safety based on the UN38.3 standard.

Outstanding enhancements in stability of LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathode by AlPO4/ACB double coating: Insights into surface structure and chemistry

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: The AlPO4/acetylene carbon black double coating greatly enhances the crystallinity and lattice bonded oxygen near the surface of LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2, leading to decreased Li/Ni disordering. The additional carbon coating effectively isolates moisture and CO2 in air, reducing the formation of Li2CO3 on the surface. Consequently, the AlPO4/acetylene carbon black double coated LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 exhibits greatly enhanced charge/discharge stability at different temperatures.

Cycle-Induced Interfacial Degradation and Transition-Metal Cross-Over in LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2-Graphite Cells

Erik Bjorklund et al.

Summary: Ni-rich lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) oxide cathode materials suffer from accelerated degradation and capacity losses over cycles. The degradation is associated with the reduction of electrolyte on the graphite anode, thickening of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SET), and transition metal dissolution, which lead to increased cathode potential and limitations in NMC capacity. The observed changes in anode and cathode surface layers provide insights into the degradation mechanisms and inform strategies for improving the cycle lifetime of Ni-rich NMCs.
