Robust MPC with data-driven demand forecasting for frequency regulation with heat pumps

Felix Bunning et al.

Summary: With the increasing demand for frequency regulation due to the growing presence of renewable energy sources and the decrease in fossil fuel-based power plants, the use of buildings' thermal inertia to offer frequency regulation services has been limited. To address this, the study proposes a system that utilizes buffer storage's thermal inertia to provide reserves for frequency regulation while maintaining user comfort. The system combines robust model predictive control, affine policies, and heating demand forecasting based on artificial neural networks. Experimental results demonstrate the system's ability to offer reserves in various conditions and track regulation signals while meeting the heating demand of connected buildings.

Optimal fuzzy logic control of energy storage systems for V/f support in distribution networks considering battery degradation

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a rule-based fuzzy logic controller method to provide coordinated voltage and frequency support using battery energy storage systems. The membership functions of the controller are optimized offline to minimize frequency and voltage deviations. Additionally, a battery degradation model is constructed using a practical aging dataset to extend battery lifetime through fuzzy rule design. Simulation results on the IEEE 33-bus distribution network demonstrate that the proposed method can satisfy operational limits and prolong battery lifetime.

Buildings-to-distribution-network integration for coordinated voltage regulation and building energy management via distributed resource flexibility

Hannah Fontenot et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel framework for Buildings-to-Distribution-Network (B2DN) integration to optimize resources across building and power distribution networks and improve overall system efficiency and reliability. Simulation results demonstrate that the B2DN controller successfully reduces distribution network active power losses and enhances voltage regulation while minimizing building energy costs and maintaining occupant comfort. Additionally, uncertainty analysis shows minimal decrease in the B2DN controller's performance in the presence of randomness in weather variables, building internal heat gains, and distribution network nodal base demands.
