An ex vivo system to study cellular dynamics underlying mouse peri-implantation development

Takafumi Ichikawa et al.

Summary: Using a Matrigel-collagen-based culture, researchers have successfully replicated mouse embryo development ex vivo, including embryonic growth, axis initiation, and overall structure. The culture system is compatible with light-sheet microscopy, allowing for the study of cellular dynamics. The study revealed the release of increasing tension in the polar trophectoderm during implantation is necessary for its constriction and invagination. The extra-embryonic ectoderm plays a key role in growth, morphogenesis, and patterning of the neighboring epiblast.

Embryotoxic effects of tribromophenol on early post-implantation development of mouse embryos in vitro

Zhihua Zhao et al.

Summary: Through the optimization of the mouse embryo in vitro culture system, the study demonstrated dose-dependent toxic effects of TBP on early post-implantation mouse embryos. The exposure to TBP inhibited the differentiation and survival of epiblast and extraembryonic endoderm cells, while not affecting extraembryonic ectoderm cells. The results suggested that TBP might inhibit embryonic development by influencing the generation of three primary germ layers and fetal membranes.

A New Group of Heterocyclic Nitrogenous Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs) in Drinking Water: Role of Extraction pH in Unknown DBP Exploration

Haiyang Tang et al.

Summary: Adjusting pH prior to extraction is crucial in water sample pretreatment for studying new disinfection byproducts. This study successfully detected a new group of nitrogenous DBPs in drinking water, with recovery rates of over 50% achieved at a pH of 3.0. The optimized method allowed for accurate detection of these DBPs with limits ranging from 0.04-1.58 ng/L, and toxicity assays indicated lower toxicity compared to halogenated benzoquinones but higher than commonly known DBPs.

Disinfection by-product (DBP) research in China: Are we on the track?

Huiyu Dong et al.

Summary: China has made significant achievements in research on disinfection by-products (DBP), including the discovery of known DBPs in Chinese drinking water, enhanced removal of DBP precursors in water treatment processes, optimization of disinfection to minimize DBP formation, and identification of unknown DBPs in drinking water. Despite covering the entire formation process of DBPs, there is still a challenge in effectively controlling the drinking water quality risk induced by DBPs. An integrated research framework including chemistry, toxicology, engineering, and epidemiology is crucial in addressing this challenge.
