Microplastics boost the accumulation of tetrabromobisphenol A in a commercial clam and elevate corresponding food safety risks

Weixia Zhang et al.

Summary: Marine bivalve molluscs, such as blood clam, are a major seafood choice for consumers. This study found that the accumulation of the pollutant tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in clams is aggravated by the presence of microplastics (MPs). This leads to higher potential food safety risks for consumers, as indicated by higher target hazard quotients (THQs) and lower margins of exposure (MoEs). Furthermore, the accumulation of TBBPA disrupts the detoxification process and limits the energy available for detoxification in clams.

Summary: Environmental pollution by plastic particles poses a potential threat to aquatic organisms and ecosystems; microplastics were found in farmed fish species with less attention compared to wild ones; significant differences in chemical composition were observed in Sparus aurata and Cyprinus carpio.

Abundance, interaction, ingestion, ecological concerns, and mitigation policies of microplastic pollution in riverine ecosystem: A review

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Microplastics (<5 mm) pose an environmental hazard to natural ecosystems and humanity due to their widespread presence and negative effects on aquatic organisms. Sampling, extraction, and detection of microplastics from various sources are complex and challenging. Global change stress, ecological concerns, and the need for science-policy integration are highlighted in the context of microplastic pollution in riverine ecosystems.

Assessment of the effect of long-term exposure to microplastics and depuration period in Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758: Liver and blood biomarkers

Antonia Solomando et al.

Summary: Exposure to LDPE-MPs had significant impacts on oxidative stress and inflammation biomarkers in the liver and plasma of Sparus aurata, while no significant changes were observed in erythrocytes. During the depuration period, most of these biomarkers showed a trend of recovery and reached levels similar to those of the control group. This indicates a certain degree of reversibility in the effects of LDPE-MPs on S. aurata.

Detection of Microplastic in Human Placenta and Meconium in a Clinical Setting

Thorsten Braun et al.

Summary: The study identified the presence of microplastics (> 50 μm) in placenta and meconium samples from caesarean deliveries, with polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyurethane being the main types detected. However, airborne polyurethane microplastics were also found in the operating room, indicating potential contamination sources. Further research into nano-sized plastics in human tissues is recommended.
