Summary: As microplastics gain global attention, the hazards of plasticizers (PAEs) have attracted people's attention in the field of agricultural soil. This study reveals, for the first time, the influence of PAEs residues on soil metabolic functions using high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics platforms. It is found that DBP treatment significantly changes the soil metabolite profile.

Vertical distribution characteristics and interactions of polycyclic aromatic compounds and bacterial communities in contaminated soil in oil storage tank areas

Guangming Xu et al.

Summary: Contamination of soil by polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) as a result of oil spills is a serious global issue. This study examined the vertical variation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), derivatives of PAHs (dPAHs), and bacterial community structure in deep soil with long-term oil spillage contamination. Results showed that the content of total PACs decreased with depth, with PAHs being the most abundant PACs. Bacterial community structure varied with depth, with higher diversity in shallow soil. The presence of PACs favored the presence of Pseudomonas in the bacterial community.

Di-n-butyl phthalate negatively affects humic acid conversion and microbial enzymatic dynamics during composting

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) stress on humic acid (HA) conversion during composting. The results showed that DBP stress can retard HA formation by altering the core microbes related to HA formation and their metabolic functions. Additionally, DBP stress also affected the enzymatic activities during composting. These findings provide valuable information for the degradation and reuse of PAE-contaminated waste.

Babak Moradi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Avicennia marina plants exhibit higher tolerance in oil-contaminated soil by activating enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidative mechanisms to remove PAHs. Results showed that A. marina was more effective in PAH removal in lower crude oil concentrations compared to non-rhizosphere soil.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure suppressed the community diversity and abundance of ammonia-oxidizers and mitigated N2O emissions in an alkaline soil

Rui Tao et al.

Summary: Exposure to phthalic acid esters (PAEs) significantly reduces N2O emissions in soil, decreases microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, alters the compositions of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) communities, and results in a decrease in AOA and AOB amoA gene abundances.

Biogeographic Changes in Forest Soil Microbial Communities of Offshore Islands-A Case Study of Remote Islands in Taiwan

Ed-Haun Chang et al.

Summary: This study identified significant differences in soil microbial communities across islands in Taiwan, with higher soil organic matter, pH, urease, and PLFA biomass on tropical volcanic islands compared to subtropical granite islands. Soil enzyme activities were positively correlated with soil organic matter and total nitrogen, and soil parent materials and climatic differences were critical factors affecting soil microbial community structure.

P. Semanti et al.

Summary: PLFA analysis was used to study the microbial community distribution in heavily polluted mangrove sediments of Thane creek, west coast of India. The analysis revealed sensitivity and active microbial diversity in the sediment. Furthermore, cumulative metabolic stress was evident from various indicators such as SAT/MUFA ratio and prolonged hypoxia.

Methylation procedures affect PLFA results more than selected extraction parameters

Cyrill U. Zosso et al.

Summary: Microorganisms play a crucial role in organic matter and nutrient cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. Analyzing microbial membrane lipids, phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) has significantly enhanced our understanding of microbial processes in these cycles. However, variations in analytical parameters like freeze-drying vs. field moist samples, sample extraction amount, solvent mixture age, and methylation methods can impact PLFA analysis results, affecting both quantitative and qualitative outcomes. Ensuring proper consideration of these parameters is important for accurate interpretation of PLFA data and comparability between different studies.

How microbes can, and cannot, be used to assess soil health

Noah Fierer et al.

Summary: Healthy soils are crucial for the health of ecosystems, economies, and human populations. Soil health is recognized as important for assessment and guiding management strategies, but measuring it accurately, especially considering the role of microbes, poses challenges. Despite the widespread use of microbe-based metrics as indicators of soil health, many existing microbial measurements may not provide credible inferences. This review explores microbial indices used in assessing soil health and suggests ways to better utilize microbial information for relevant and actionable assessments.

Concentration, distribution, source apportionment, and risk assessment of surrounding soil PAHs in industrial and rural areas: A comparative study

Zeyu Xu et al.

Summary: This study compared the concentration, distribution, source identification, and risk assessment of PAHs in soils from surrounding areas of an abandoned industrial district and an ecological village in Zhejiang Province, China. The results showed that industrial areas had higher levels of PAHs originating from fossil fuel burning and vehicle emissions, while rural areas had lower levels mainly from biomass burning and vehicle emission. Adults might face higher potential health risk than children, and the overall ecological risk of soil PAH pollution was low in rural areas.

Spatial distributions and sources of PAHs in soil in chemical industry parks in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Tianqi Jia et al.

Summary: The study investigated the profiles and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil samples collected from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and a typical chemical park in the YRD. Results showed that PAHs in YRD soil were mainly from coal combustion and vehicle emissions, while in RD, they were likely due to the volatilization and leakage of chemical raw materials. The study also suggested that industrial and traffic emissions were the main sources of PAHs in the soil, with negligible cancer risks to adults but higher risks to children.
