Understandable multifunctionality measures using Hill numbers

Jarrett E. K. Byrnes et al.

Summary: Multifunctionality metrics aim to assess the simultaneous performance of multiple ecosystem functions. Based on the framework of species diversity, a new metric is proposed that considers the number of functions, the evenness of performance levels, and the average level of function performance. It takes into account the correlation structure among functions and provides a comprehensive measure of system performance.

Expert perspectives on global biodiversity loss and its drivers and impacts on people

Forest Isbell et al.

Summary: Despite progress in understanding global biodiversity loss, there are still taxonomic and geographic knowledge gaps. Decision makers often rely on expert judgement, but cannot engage with large and diverse groups of specialists. A survey of biodiversity experts worldwide revealed consensus and differences in perspectives and estimates, with underrepresented groups recommending different conservation priorities and providing higher estimates of biodiversity loss.

Assessing the importance of species and their assemblages for the biodiversity-ecosystem multifunctionality relationship

Akira S. Mori et al.

Summary: Biodiversity changes can have serious consequences for ecosystem functionality. This study introduces different methods to assess the relationship between diversity and multifunctionality, focusing on redundancy/uniqueness and the influence of the number and identity of functions. The results highlight the importance of retaining high levels of diversity in managed assemblages and emphasize the need to unravel the hierarchical roles of biodiversity. Understanding the relationship between biodiversity and multifunctionality is crucial for both theory and practice.

Increasing the number of stressors reduces soil ecosystem services worldwide

Matthias C. Rillig et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the relationship between soil stressors exceeding critical thresholds and ecosystem services. They find that multiple stressors crossing a high-level threshold reduce soil functioning and can predict ecosystem functioning. Increasing environmental stressors may decrease ecosystem functioning in soils. However, this relationship has not been globally assessed. Using global field surveys and natural and human factors, the authors test the relationship between stressors exceeding different critical thresholds and ecosystem services maintenance. Their analysis shows that multiple stressors, especially those crossing a high-level threshold, significantly reduce soil biodiversity and functioning globally. The number of stressors exceeding the >75% threshold consistently predicts multiple ecosystem services, enhancing the prediction of ecosystem functioning.

Multitrophic diversity and biotic associations influence subalpine forest ecosystem multifunctionality

Ya-Huang Luo et al.

Summary: Biodiversity and species interactions have significant effects on ecosystem multifunctionality. Elevation and soil pH can modify species composition and richness, and influence multiple ecosystem functions simultaneously. Species richness across multiple trophic groups has stronger effects on multifunctionality than species richness at any single trophic level. Biotic associations are positively associated with multifunctionality. The relative effects of diversity on multifunctionality increase at the scale of the larger community.

Summary: The study shows that different restoration methods have varying impacts on grassland ecosystem multifunctionality, with low-cost measures proving to be more effective compared to high-cost measures. Plant species richness is found to be the most accurate indicator of ecosystem multifunctionality, highlighting its importance in restoration monitoring.

Grand challenges in biodiversity-ecosystem functioning research in the era of science-policy platforms require explicit consideration of feedbacks

Mary I. O'Connor et al.

Summary: Feedbacks between biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human wellbeing are not fully accounted for in global policy efforts, leading to exacerbated uncertainty in future projections and hindering sustainability. Addressing scientific research challenges and integrating feedbacks can help policy and conservation efforts to account for ecosystem and societal consequences of biodiversity change effectively.

Diversity and asynchrony in soil microbial communities stabilizes ecosystem functioning

Cameron Wagg et al.

Summary: Both theoretical and empirical research have shown the importance of biodiversity for stabilizing ecosystem functions over time. Experimental results indicate that microbial diversity plays a crucial role in enhancing the temporal stability of ecosystem functions, with asynchrony among microbial taxa serving as a key mechanism for the stabilizing effect of soil biodiversity.

We should not necessarily expect positive relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in observational field data

James G. Hagan et al.

Summary: Studies have found generally positive relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem function in controlled experiments, while observational field data show variable relationships. Biotic interactions filtering species during community assembly may result in high biodiversity effects on functioning even with low observed local diversity.
