Residue decomposition dynamics in mixed ratios of two warm-season cover crops

Larousse Dorissant et al.

Summary: Cover crop residue management is important for providing soil cover and nutrient availability. The rate of carbon and nitrogen mineralization from cover crops depends on the nutrient composition and rates of mineralization. A field experiment showed that the decomposition of cover crop residues followed similar patterns, with the majority of decomposition occurring within the first 7 days.

The combination of residue quality, residue placement and soil mineral N content drives C and N dynamics by modifying N availability to microbial decomposers

Bruno Chaves et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of crop residues on soil carbon and nitrogen mineralization dynamics through experimental research and simulation methods. It was found that residues with high C:N ratios experienced slowed decomposition rates due to nitrogen limitation, influenced by residue placement and soil nitrogen content. Overall, increased net nitrogen mineralization corresponded with reduced nitrogen availability.
