Evaluating the utility of protected area status and conservation legislation in tropical forest conservation using satellite data: a case study of the great hornbill in Thailand

Naparat Suttidate

Summary: Preserving wildlife and their habitat requires the establishment of protected areas and monitoring of their effects. In this study, the effectiveness of a protected area and a logging ban in preserving and restoring habitat for the great hornbill in Thailand was evaluated. The results showed that the establishment of the protected area did not reduce habitat fragmentation, but the logging ban successfully halted fragmentation within the protected area. Multiple strategies may be needed to effectively preserve endangered habitat and species in tropical forests.

Collapse of Breeding Success in Desert-Dwelling Hornbills Evident Within a Single Decade

Nicholas B. Pattinson et al.

Summary: Rapid anthropogenic climate change can severely reduce avian breeding success. A study on southern yellow-billed hornbills in the Kalahari Desert over a decade found that breeding output collapsed, with high air temperature and drought identified as the main drivers.

The rise and fall of an alien: why the successful colonizer Littorina saxatilis failed to invade the Mediterranean Sea

Luciano Bosso et al.

Summary: Understanding the factors that determine the success or failure of biological invasions is crucial. This study used Ecological Niche Modelling to investigate the habitat suitability of Littorina saxatilis in Europe and found that environmental constraints and biogeography play important roles in its distribution. The results suggest that abiotic factors and local ecological features are key in determining the success of invasion.

Expanding or shrinking? range shifts in wild ungulates under climate change in Pamir-Karakoram mountains, Pakistan

Hussain Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the populations of Himalayan ibex and blue sheep in the Pamir-Karakoram mountains to understand their distribution shifts under climate change scenarios and predict future habitats. Results indicated that both species currently have suitable habitats in about 37% and 9% of the study area, but they are projected to lose significant parts of their habitats under changing climate scenarios. The Pamir-Karakoram ranges are expected to serve as climate refugia for both species, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts in this region for Pakistan's mountain ungulates.

Extreme winter weather disrupts bird occurrence and abundance patterns at geographic scales

Jeremy M. Cohen et al.

Summary: Due to modern climate change, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are increasing, making species especially vulnerable to extreme weather during winter. Research found that birds responded differently to extreme weather events, with smaller-bodied, warm-adapted passerines showing the most negative response to the polar vortex and the most positive response to the winter heat wave, while larger-bodied, cold-adapted waterbirds exhibited mild responses to both events.
