Investigating the trade-offs between the supply and demand for ecosystem services for regional spatial management

Yuan Yuan et al.

Summary: Understanding the supply and demand characteristics of ecosystem services and their trade-offs is crucial for effective ecosystem management. This study evaluated the supply, demand, and trade-offs of multiple ecosystem services in Changzhi, China, and proposed an urban spatial management framework based on the trade-offs and importance of different ecological functions. The results showed spatial heterogeneity in the supply and demand of ecosystem services, as well as trade-offs and synergies among different services. The study identified spatial mismatches and deficits in certain areas, providing a basis for spatial planning and ecosystem management.

Towards sustainable forestry: Using a spatial Bayesian belief network to quantify trade-offs among forest-related ecosystem services

Catherine Frizzle et al.

Summary: This study explored the trade-offs among ecosystem services (ESs) provided by forests, aiming to guide decision-making towards sustainable forestry using a Bayesian belief network (BBN) at the landscape level. By integrating spatial data, forest operational rules, ESs, and probabilistic statistics, the study demonstrated the potential to identify areas where timber harvesting should be avoided or have minimal negative effects on other ESs, even meeting sustainable forestry objectives. Through high-resolution spatial data and simulation of changes in ES indicators within the BBN, the study showed the ability to evaluate management scenarios to reduce trade-offs and provide key information for sustainable forest management decision-making.

Impacts of urbanization on ecosystem services in the Chengdu-Chongqing Urban Agglomeration: Changes and trade-offs

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: The urban-rural transitional areas in southwestern China play a crucial role in sustainable ecosystem creation. A study in the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration found that the rural-urban fringe had stronger interactions between ecosystem services compared to urban areas. Particularly, the synergy between habitat quality and carbon storage was stronger than any other interactions in the entire study area.

Exploring social-ecological impacts on trade-offs and synergies among ecosystem services

Xiaoyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study explores how social-ecological factors influence the interactions of ecosystem services (ESs). Using the Sutlej-Beas River Basin as a case study, the study identifies two dominant types of ESs interactions and correlates them with various social-ecological factors. It also identifies four main ES bundles that describe their spatial relationships with social-ecological factors. The study provides insights for an integrated watershed-based management of ESs.

Uncovering spatial patterns of ecosystem services and biodiversity through local communities' preferences and perceptions

Aline Pingarroni et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the dynamics of tropical agricultural frontiers in Mexico and explores the preferences, importance, and perceptions of ecosystem services (ES) and biodiversity at different scales. The study found contrasting patterns of ES and biodiversity in different regions and ejidos, highlighting the role of socio-ecological factors in shaping these patterns. It also discusses the trade-offs between biodiversity conservation and agriculture and the potential of local conservation initiatives and national plans in reconciling these trade-offs.

Mapping ecosystem service supply and demand dynamics under rapid urban expansion: A case study in the Yangtze River Delta of China

Yu Tao et al.

Summary: This study maps the supply and demand dynamics of carbon sequestration and nature-based recreation in the urbanizing Yangtze River Delta of China. It reveals an increasing gap between demand and supply due to urban expansion, highlighting the need for sustainable urbanization. Bridging this gap requires controlling urban expansion, constructing urban-to-rural greenways, and improving economic efficiency of industrial carbon emissions.

Ecosystem service trade-offs and spatial non-stationary responses to influencing factors in the Loess hilly-gully region: Lanzhou City, China

Ting Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates four key ecosystem services in Lanzhou using the InVEST model and measures trade-offs and synergies relationships among them. The research also explores the spatial response of trade-offs to influencing factors and formulates strategies for enhancing synergies. The findings provide guidance for regional ecosystem optimization and township development.

Challenges in trade-off governance of ecosystem services: Evidence from the Loess Plateau in China

Fan Wu et al.

Summary: This study uses multi-source data and assessment methods to analyze the spatial and temporal dynamics and trade-off changes of eight ecosystem services on the Loess Plateau. The study finds the interactions and changes in trade-offs between different services, providing theoretical and decision-making references for ecosystem management in ecologically fragile regions.

Land-use zoning management to protecting the Regional Key Ecosystem Services: A case study in the city belt along the Chaobai River, China

Xiao Li et al.

Summary: The paper examines the tradeoffs and synergies among ecosystem services, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing protection and management of key ecosystem services. Through empirical research and model analysis, water yield was identified as the Regional Key Ecosystem Service in the study area. A land zoning approach was proposed to protect the RKES and ensure ecological security and sustainable use.
