Can the green credit policy stimulate green innovation in heavily polluting enterprises? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China

Guoqiang Hu et al.

Summary: The study finds that the 2012 Green Credit Guidelines have positively impacted green patent output of heavily polluting enterprises, particularly those with stronger financial constraints. The effect is more pronounced in HPEs with higher expected sunk costs or noncompliance costs, intense product market competition, and state ownership. These results suggest that the Green Credit Policy can promote green innovation in HPEs by imposing credit constraints, facilitating green transformation in an emerging economy.
