Integrating biogeography and behavioral ecology to rapidly address biodiversity loss

Katharine A. Marske et al.

Summary: Addressing climate change and biodiversity loss is a crucial challenge of our time. Policymakers have limited time to prevent the worst impacts and must make complex decisions about land use for biodiversity preservation. Integrating biogeography and behavioral ecology can enhance our ability to predict biodiversity's response to climate change and habitat loss and slow down biodiversity loss.

The characteristic time of ecological communities

Vicente J. Ontiveros et al.

Summary: A simple description of temporal dynamics of ecological communities can help in understanding community assembly, predicting ecological responses to environmental disturbances, and improving biological conservation actions. Using a simple stochastic model of island biogeography, two quantities were proposed to characterize community dynamics: the community characteristic time and the characteristic Jaccard index. The study highlights the usefulness of simple approximations in exploring the temporal component in ecological studies.
