New geochronology of the Lower Cretaceous in the Luanping Basin, northern Hebei: Age constraints on the development of early Jehol Biota

Zhiqiang Yu et al.

Summary: The Valanginian and Hauterivian stages of the Early Cretaceous are crucial for the coevolution of vertebrate species and flowering angiosperms, as well as the diversification of dinosaurs and early birds on land. The Early Cretaceous Jehol Biota in northern China, particularly the Luanping Basin, provides valuable fossil evidence for understanding terrestrial ecosystems and paleoclimatic changes. This study presents a chronology for the Lower Cretaceous Dabeigou and Dadianzi formations based on zircon analyses, biostratigraphy, and lithostratigraphy. The findings show that these formations are coeval with the Huajiying Formation, representing the early evolution of the Jehol Biota, and provide insight into the early stage of its evolution.

Rollback, scissor-like closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean and formation of an orocline: magmatic migration based on a large archive of age data

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: A large data-set of ages of magmatic rocks shows tightly curved linear magmatic belts and their migrations towards the central suture, indicating a scissor-like closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean. Understanding the closure of oceans with irregular margins and the formation of curved mountain belts is crucial for plate reconstruction and continental assembly.

Cretaceous basin evolution in northeast Asia: tectonic responses to the paleo-Pacific plate subduction

Qing-Ren Meng et al.

Summary: Cretaceous basins in NE Asia were formed from different types of continental rifting in disparate regions, influenced by differential subduction and slab tearing of the western paleo-Pacific plate. The different types of rift basins, including passive, active, and wide rift basins, developed in different regions due to crustal stretching, asthenospheric upwelling, and lithospheric-scale tear fault. The Late Cretaceous period in NE Asia witnessed mild deformation and weak magmatism, possibly caused by kinematic variation of the paleo-Pacific plate.

Mesozoic building of the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar (NW China) revealed by low-temperature thermochronology

Zhiyuan He et al.

Summary: The Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar regions underwent moderate to rapid basement cooling during the Cretaceous, likely due to far-field effects of accretion and collision along the south Eurasia margin. The East Junggar experienced cooling events from the late Permian to Early Jurassic, possibly related to post-orogenic transpression along major faults and distal effects of the Qiangtang-Eurasia collision. Combined with existing evidence, it is suggested that there was no significant exhumation in the Eastern Tianshan and East Junggar during the Cenozoic.

Late Mesozoic intracontinental deformation and magmatism in North and NE China in response to multi-plate convergence in NE Asia: An overview and new view

Yueqiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the major late Mesozoic contractional deformation in North and NE China and establishes the tempo-spatial distribution pattern of Jurassic-Cretaceous magmatism, aiming to clarify its link with evolving multi-plate convergent geodynamics in NE Asia. Three tectonic stages are recognized, with distinct crustal shortening and rejuvenation during the middle stage, and alternating compression and extension during the late stage.

Dynamical significance of the Tanlu Fault Zone in the destruction of the North China Craton: The evidence provided by the three-dimensional Magnetotelluric array study

Gaofeng Ye et al.

Summary: Based on magnetotelluric array data collected in the Tanlu Fault Zone (TLFZ) and adjacent areas, it was found that the crust of the Luxi Uplift (LXU) to the west and the Sulu Orogenic Belt (SOB) to the east of the TLFZ exhibit high resistivity characteristics, while the mantle of the LXU shows low-resistivity characteristics. Low-resistivity anomalies were found corresponding to both branches of the TLFZ.

North China block underwent simultaneous true polar wander and tectonic convergence in late Jurassic: New paleomagnetic constraints

Yangjun Gao et al.

Summary: The study identified the paleogeographic changes in the North China Block during the Jurassic period, attributing them to true polar wander and plate tectonic components. It also estimated the northward plate moving velocity for the North China Block, and suggested that it accreted to Eurasia around 140 Ma. Additionally, the accumulation of subducted slabs at high paleolatitudes may have contributed to the Jurassic true polar wander.

The Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone, Tibet Plateau: Its role in the tectonic evolution of the eastern Tethys Ocean

Suhua Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examined the geological evolution and structural features of the Tibet Plateau region by analyzing the deep structure, gravity anomalies, and tectonic processes associated with the Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone. The findings reveal a complex history of convergence, collision, and uplift that shaped the eastern Neo-Tethys Ocean. The closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Ocean marked the extinction of the eastern Neo-Tethys, with scissor-style movement from east to west during the Jurassic to Cretaceous period.
