SEM petrography of dispersed organic matter in black shales: A review

Bei Liu et al.

Summary: This article reviews the petrographic characteristics of dispersed organic matter (DOM) in black shales under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The correlative microscopy technique combining reflected-light and electron microscopy is found to be the most effective method for identifying both the types and hosted pores of organic matter. Factors controlling the formation and preservation of organic matter-hosted pores are also discussed. The findings suggest that the specific surface area and pore volume of organic matter in black shales follow parabolic patterns with increasing thermal maturity.

Nano-scale physicochemical attributes and their impact on pore heterogeneity in shale

Debanjan Chandra et al.

Summary: This study investigates the shale fabric and estimates the pore volume distribution in shales of varying thermal maturity and organic carbon content. The results show that higher thermal maturity shales have a greater bulk accessible pore volume and smaller mesopores are less accessible compared to coarser pores. The uniformity of functional group and organic matter distribution in shale depends on maturity and reflects the variation in pore volume.

Exploration potential of different lithofacies of deep marine shale gas systems: Insight into organic matter accumulation and pore formation mechanisms

Enze Wang et al.

Summary: With the advancement of exploration and exploitation technologies, deep shale gas systems are becoming an important focus for the petroleum industry. However, there is a lack of systematic geological studies on these systems. This study focuses on the deeply buried shales of the Silurian Longmaxi formation in the southeastern margin of the Sichuan Basin. Through various analyses, the researchers identified different lithofacies and their geological and geochemical features, reconstructed the paleoenvironment, and summarized the factors and mechanisms that control organic matter accumulation and pore formation. The study also revealed the lithofacies with favorable exploration potential and demonstrated the significant impacts of lithofacies on the deep shale gas system.

Pore Structure Characterization and Reservoir Quality Evaluation of Analcite-Rich Shale Oil Reservoir from the Bohai Bay Basin

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: The pore characteristics and reservoir quality of analcite-rich shale oil reservoir in the Bohai Bay Basin were studied using various techniques, identifying six typical shale lithofacies. Siliceous shale showed high matrix permeability and good pore connectivity, while analcite-rich shale exhibited larger specific surface area and micropore volume. The authigenic analcite mineral had different effects on pore development and reservoir quality, with some primary pores lost but new secondary dissolution pores generated during diagenesis processes. Additionally, total organic carbon content also played a role in controlling reservoir quality.

Summary: The Permian Shanxi Formation in China is expected to be a potential economic gas shale for exploration and development, with organic-rich shales enriched in clay minerals and mesopores as the predominant pore type. The development of organic-hosted pores in the shale exhibits differences when compared to marine gas shales globally, attributed to variations in kerogen types. However, the presence of micropores and mesopores in the samples indicates sufficient space for gas storage, providing crucial theoretical guidance for further exploration and development of transitional shale gas.
