GPR application for the characterization of sinkholes in Teresina, Brazil

Alexandre Lisboa Lago et al.

Summary: The town of Teresina in Brazil has a history of land sinking, and the Geological Survey of Brazil/CPRM conducted a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) study to identify shallow caves and dissolution structures. The study demonstrated the potential of GPR in characterizing the subsoil of paved streets and identifying various layers.

UAV and GPR Data Integration in Glacier Geometry Reconstruction: A Case Study from Irenebreen, Svalbard

Janis Karuss et al.

Summary: This study presents the first GPR measurement data and high-resolution DEM and orthomosaic obtained from UAV photogrammetry of Irenebreen glacier. The results show that Irenebreen is a polythermal glacier with a basal temperate ice layer, and localized temperate ice zones can form due to several factors. The combination of UAV photogrammetry and GPR is successful in high-resolution reconstruction of 3D geometries of small glaciers.

The peat bog at Zinnwald-Georgenfeld revisited after 25 years: Geochemical investigation of water, Sphagnum moss and peat cores

Elke Bozau et al.

Summary: The study investigated the trace metal concentrations in bog water, Sphagnum mosses, and peat cores in the Eastern Ore Mountains of Germany. The results showed no changes in bog waters, while the concentrations of trace metals in Sphagnum mosses significantly decreased. The elemental data of the peat sampled in the 1990s and in 2019 were found to be in the same concentration range, indicating a low growth rate of the peat.

Surface water and groundwater hydraulics of lowland karst aquifers of Estonia

Oliver Koit et al.

Summary: Karst aquifers are an important source of domestic groundwater in Estonia. This study focused on two lowland karst systems and their interaction with the hosting karst aquifer. The research found that the hydrology and hydraulics of these systems were influenced by factors such as evapotranspiration, snow deposition, and snowmelt floods. The solute transport characteristics varied significantly due to differences in the structure and maturity of karst porosity.

Investigating peatland stratigraphy and development of the Sijec bog (Slovenia) using near-surface geophysical methods

Valentina Pezdir et al.

Summary: Geophysical methods were used to determine peat thickness and morphology of the Sijec bog, revealing that the peat formation originated from a lake with four deeper depressions separated by glacial deposits. The results illustrate the potential of geophysical methods in inferring formational processes in peatlands.

Sinkhole development in the Sivas gypsum karst, Turkey

Ergin Gokkaya et al.

Summary: The extensive gypsum karst in Sivas, Turkey showcases remarkable geomorphic features such as stepped planation surfaces, deeply entrenched canyons, polygonal karst, and various types of sinkholes. The spatial distribution and evolution of these sinkholes are analyzed within the broader geomorphological context dominated by autogenic recharge. The morphology and evolution of the sinkholes are influenced by the hydrogeological functioning of different sectors, showing a general spatial zonation and reflecting the complex geological processes of Earth's evolution.

High-resolution electrical resistivity tomography and seismic refraction for groundwater exploration in fracture hard rocks: A case study in Kanthan, Perak, Malaysia

Sean Cheong Heng Lee et al.

Summary: This research successfully identified and located potential groundwater in fracture carbonate hard rocks through the integration of high-resolution electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and seismic refraction methods. The Data Levels Synthesization (DLS) method enhanced the accuracy in delineating hydrogeological structures and anomalies, ultimately achieving a high-resolution ERT image validated through seismic refraction, lineament map, and tube well drillings.

Geophysical mapping of residual pollution at the remediated Incukalns acid tar lagoon, Latvia

Janis Karuss et al.

Summary: Acid tar lagoons (ATLs) are a widespread environmental issue globally, causing significant pollution to soil, atmosphere, as well as surface and ground waters. This study used ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to characterize the distribution of pollution plume near the southern Incukalias ATL in Latvia. The combination of GPR and ERT proved to be an effective tool for analyzing the geospatial distribution of pollution plumes caused by ATLs in areas with complex geological cross-sections.
