Older adults experiencing polypharmacy preferred to continue their non-prescription products during a card sorting activity

Yehya Maitah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interest of adults aged 65 and older who take 10 or more non-prescription medications in deprescribing. Through online semi-structured interviews, participants were asked to imagine their primary care provider suggesting deprescribing and categorize each medication as continue, stop, lower (deprescribe), or unsure. The findings, analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis, showed that only 6% of the non-prescription medications had an interest in deprescribing among the participants (n = 15). The conclusion was that older adults were resistant to deprescribing non-prescription products.

Prevalence of health literacy and its correlates from a national survey of older adults

Sumithra Devi Suppiah et al.

Summary: This study determined the prevalence and correlates of limited and marginal health literacy (HL) among older Singaporeans. The results showed that over two-thirds of older adults faced difficulties in reading, understanding, exchanging, and using health information and resources. It is therefore important to raise awareness about the potential issues that could arise from the mismatch between healthcare system demands and the HL of older adults.

Identifying over-the-counter information to prioritize for the purpose of reducing adverse drug reactions in older adults: A national survey of pharmacists

Beth A. Martin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the importance of different sections of the Drug Facts Label (DFL) in reducing adverse drug reactions (ADRs) among older adults. Pharmacists ranked the sections and found that uses and purpose, active ingredient, warnings, and directions for use were the most critical. Prioritizing warnings that highlight drug interactions, disease precautions, and the need for medical advice before taking OTC medications can help reduce ADRs.

Unprescribed and unnoticed: Retrospective chart review of adverse events of interactions between antidepressants and over-the-counter drugs

Jaroslaw Woron et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of adverse effects of antidepressants and over-the-counter drugs interactions through a retrospective chart review. The results showed that the simultaneous use of antidepressants and other drugs could lead to adverse events. Some over-the-counter drugs were found to have pharmacokinetic interactions with antidepressants, resulting in categorized side effects. The study suggested monitoring the use of over-the-counter drugs by patients as they may increase the severity of side effects of antidepressants.

The views of Australian adults experiencing pain on the upscheduling of codeine-containing analgesics to 'prescription only'

John Mishriky et al.

Summary: The study investigated the views of Australian adults experiencing pain on the 2018 codeine upscheduling. Results showed mixed views, with some participants believing the upscheduling encourages better consultation with healthcare professionals, while others finding it more difficult to manage pain with the restrictions in place. There is an opportunity for healthcare providers to offer alternative pain management advice and support now that codeine is only available with a prescription in Australian pharmacies.

Using change detection to objectively evaluate whether novel over-the-counter drug labels can increase attention to critical health information among older adults

Summary: Research suggests that consumers often overlook critical information, such as active ingredients and warnings, when purchasing over-the-counter drugs. Novel label designs that highlight and place warning labels on the front of packages can increase attention to this important information, potentially reducing medication errors.
