Correlates of anxiety and depression in a community cohort of people who smoke methamphetamine

Zoe Duncan et al.

Summary: The study examined the prevalence of anxiety and depression among a cohort of individuals who smoked methamphetamine in a community-recruited setting. It found that 60% of participants experienced moderate to severe anxiety and/or depression. Factors associated with higher odds of experiencing these mental health issues included poor self-rated health, methamphetamine dependence, and unemployment, while factors associated with lower odds included living in a large rural town, identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and smoking methamphetamine.

Cognitive Remediation as an Adjunct Treatment for Substance Use Disorders: A Systematic Review

Talia Nardo et al.

Summary: Cognitive remediation as an adjunct treatment for substance use disorders is a promising avenue for improving cognition and treatment outcomes, although the existing studies show considerable heterogeneity and lack of high-quality evidence. Further replication and research are needed to draw more convincing conclusions.

Development of Goal Management Training+ for Methamphetamine Use Disorder Through Collaborative Design

Alexandra C. Anderson et al.

Summary: This study aimed to tailor Goal Management Training (GMT) for methamphetamine use disorder (MUD), explore consumer engagement with the revised program, implement a prototype with consumers, and present the manualized program to clinical service providers. The findings indicated the importance of targeting key cognitive processes and enhancing the personal relevance of the program strategies and materials for people with MUD. The GMT(+) program developed through this process is sensitive to the clinical needs of individuals with MUD and has shown initial acceptability among consumers and providers.

Cognitive boosting interventions for impulsivity in addiction: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cognitive training, remediation and pharmacological enhancement

Alexandra C. Anderson et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the effects of three cognitive boosting intervention approaches on impulsive action and impulsive choice, finding that cognitive remediation, especially goal management training, may be an effective treatment for addressing impulsive choice in addiction. Preliminary evidence does not support the use of computerised cognitive training or pharmacological enhancers to boost impulse control in addiction.

Methamphetamine use and technology-mediated psychosocial interventions: A mini-review

Adam J. Rubenis et al.

Summary: Engagement with face-to-face psychosocial interventions is often compromised in people using methamphetamine, but technology-mediated interventions offer flexible ways of treatment. Evidence from eight studies suggests that telephone counselling may be effective in aftercare and text-messaging interventions can reach those who are not in treatment. Different intervention methods showed similar effectiveness in reducing MA use among individuals, but directive counselling style may have negative effects on certain resistant individuals.

A unified online test battery for cognitive impulsivity reveals relationships with real-world impulsive behaviours

Antonio Verdejo-Garcia et al.

Summary: The article introduces a novel online test system with a gamified interface that aids in predicting addiction-related problems in the real world. Researchers conceptualize rapid-response impulsive behaviors as stemming from the failure of three cognitive mechanisms: attentional control, information gathering, and monitoring/shifting. The results demonstrate good criterion validity of the cognitive impulsivity test system in predicting real-world addiction-related problems.

The JASP guidelines for conducting and reporting a Bayesian analysis

Johnny van Doorn et al.

Summary: Although there is a lack of practical guidelines on how to apply Bayesian procedures and interpret results in empirical research, this study offers specific guidance for four stages of Bayesian statistical reasoning in a research setting: planning the analysis, executing the analysis, interpreting the results, and reporting the results. Each stage's guidelines are illustrated with a running example, primarily focusing on analyses performed with the open-source statistical software JASP, but with applicability to Bayesian inference in general.
