Size effect in electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of impurity centers in diamond particles

A. I. Shames et al.

Summary: The experiments showed that the EPR spectra undergo qualitative changes as the size of diamond particles decreases. This is due to the indirect exchange interaction between localized electrons on bulk impurity centers and electrons on surface centers, resulting in resonant energy transfer and affecting the characteristic structure of the EPR spectra.

Spatially Resolved Spin-Lattice Relaxation Times and Line Widths in Manganese-Grafted Detonation Nanodiamonds

A. M. Panich et al.

Summary: We report a novel approach to determine the spatially resolved nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times and NMR line widths in nanomaterials. We applied this approach to detonation nanodiamonds with manganese ions grafted onto their surface and observed the acceleration of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation and broadening of the resonance line. By using spin dephasing experiments, we were able to determine the contribution of paramagnetic Mn2+ ions to the relaxation time and line width of carbon spins at different depths from the diamond surface. Developed specifically for nanodiamonds, this approach can be applied to study distribution of relaxation rates and line broadening, and map magnetic interactions inside various nanoparticles, making it valuable in nanotechnologies.

Anomalous Formation of Irradiation-Induced Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in 5 nm-Sized Detonation Nanodiamonds

Frederick T. -K. So et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the formation mechanism of NV- centers in 5 nm detonation nanodiamonds (DNDs) and finds that it is different from high-pressure high-temperature synthesized nanodiamonds. The study also discovers that the NV- concentration in 5 nm DNDs exceeds that of 20 nm-sized nanodiamonds.

Direct synthesis of group IV-vacancy center-containing nanodiamonds via detonation process using aromatic compound as group IV element source

Yuto Makino et al.

Summary: In this study, a detonation process was used to fabricate nanodiamonds containing group IV-vacancy (G4V) centers. The synthesis of silicon-vacancy (SiV) and germanium-vacancy (GeV) center-containing nanodiamonds was successful, while tin-vacancy (SnV) center-containing nanodiamonds were not obtained in detectable concentrations. The results suggest that the reaction thermodynamics for each group IV atom play a role in the synthesis.

Manganese-grafted detonation nanodiamond, a novel potential MRI contrast agent

A. M. Panich et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel nanomaterial called detonation nanodiamond (DND) with manganese ions grafted to its surface was successfully prepared and investigated for its potential as an MRI contrast agent. The chemical binding of Mn2+ ions to the nanodiamond surface was confirmed, with interactions accelerating spin-lattice relaxation. Comparison with Gd-grafted DND suggests that Mn-DND has promising applications in MRI contrast imaging.

Size Effects on Surface Chemistry and Raman Spectra of Sub-5 nm Oxidized High-Pressure High-Temperature and Detonation Nanodiamonds

Stepan Stehlik et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of size on the surface chemistry, microscopic structure, and Raman scattering of nanodiamonds, revealing size-dependent and synthesis-dependent differences in their properties. By analyzing particle size distribution and comparing detonation and high-pressure high-temperature nanodiamonds, the study identified effects of diamond core size, defects, chemical stability, and phonon confinement models. Additionally, low-frequency Raman scattering was observed, suggesting confined acoustic vibrational modes in the nanodiamonds.

PVP-coated Gd-grafted nanodiamonds as a novel and potentially safer contrast agent for in vivo MRI

Alexander M. Panich et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that saline suspension of PVP-coated gadolinium-grafted detonation nanodiamonds (DND) serves as a promising contrast agent in MRI, providing higher signal intensities than the commonly used gadoterate meglumin. This novel contrast agent shows potential for safer clinical use based on its performance in ex vivo and in vivo testing.
