Treatment of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Diagnosed Early in Pregnancy

David Simmons et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of early treatment for gestational diabetes before 20 weeks' gestation on maternal and infant health is not clear. In this study, women at risk of hyperglycemia and diagnosed with gestational diabetes were randomly assigned to receive immediate treatment or deferred/no treatment based on the results of an oral glucose-tolerance test at 24 to 28 weeks' gestation. The results showed that immediate treatment led to a slightly lower incidence of adverse neonatal outcomes, but no significant differences were observed for pregnancy-related hypertension or neonatal lean body mass.

Knowledge of gestational diabetes mellitus at first consultation in a multi-ethnic pregnant population in the Oslo region, Norway - a cross-sectional study

Iren Borgen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate knowledge of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) among a multi-ethnic pregnant population in the Oslo region. The results showed that non-native Norwegian speakers had poorer knowledge of GDM compared to native Norwegian speakers, and this association was not due to language skills. Ethnic background was found to be associated with the level of knowledge of GDM.

A Clinical Update on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Arianne Sweeting et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) refers to abnormal glucose tolerance that occurs during pregnancy and is associated with higher infant birthweight, as well as future maternal and offspring cardiometabolic disease. The prevalence of GDM is increasing globally due to factors such as rising obesity rates in women of reproductive age and revised diagnostic criteria. Although there is a lack of international consensus on the diagnosis of GDM, it is important to recognize it as an early risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, considering its long-term complications for both mothers and offspring.

Tighter or less tight glycaemic targets for women with gestational diabetes mellitus for reducing maternal and perinatal morbidity: A stepped-wedge, cluster-randomised trial

Caroline A. Crowther et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of tighter compared with less tight glycemic control on the morbidity of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed that tighter glycemic control did not reduce the risk of large for gestational age infant, but did reduce serious infant morbidity, while increasing the risk of serious maternal morbidity.

Early gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with worse pregnancy outcomes compared with GDM diagnosed at 24-28 weeks gestation despite early treatment

M. Mustafa et al.

Summary: The study revealed that women with early GDM (<24 weeks) and their offspring have a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including pregnancy-induced hypertension, post-partum hemorrhage, and gestational diabetes. These findings emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to improve the quality of pregnancy outcomes.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Clinical Characteristics and Perinatal Outcomes in a Multiethnic Population of North Italy

M. Caputo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical characteristics and perinatal outcomes in Caucasian women with GDM born in Italy and High Migration Pressure Countries (HMPC) living in Piedmont, North Italy. It found that women from HMPC were younger and required insulin treatment more frequently. The study suggested that the need for insulin therapy may be related to different genetic backgrounds, dietary habits, and Nutrition Transition phenomena, emphasizing the importance of tailored nutritional intervention and insulin treatment.
