Sleep Apnea-Specific Hypoxic Burden, Symptom Subtypes, and Risk of Cardiovascular Events and All-Cause Mortality

Wojciech Trzepizur et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether symptom subtypes and OSA-specific hypoxic burden are associated with the risk of major adverse CV events in a clinical setting. The results showed that HB and overall nocturnal hypoxemia were the only predictors of MACE, with a stronger association seen in younger patients and women.

Screening for sleep-disordered breathing in people with type 1 diabetes by combining polysomnography with glucose variability assessment

Damien Basille et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in type 1 diabetes (T1DM) patients. The results showed that SDB was highly prevalent in these patients and was associated with obesity. However, there was no association between sleep disorders and high glucose variability or low glucose levels.

Risk of incident obstructive sleep apnoea in patients with type 1 diabetes: a population-based retrospective cohort study

Ziyad Alshehri et al.

Summary: Individuals with type 1 diabetes are at an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnoea compared with people without diabetes. Clinicians should suspect obstructive sleep apnoea in patients with type 1 diabetes if they are old, have obesity, are male, have atrial fibrillation or depression, or if they are taking lipid-lowering or antihypertensive drugs.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Yerem Yeghiazarians et al.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea is common among middle-aged and older adults and often underrecognized, especially in patients with heart disease. Screening and treatment for sleep-disordered breathing should be considered for cardiac patients, with follow-up sleep testing to assess treatment effectiveness.

Understanding Metabolic Memory: The Prolonged Influence of Glycemia During the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) on Future Risks of Complications During the Study of the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC)

John M. Lachin et al.

Summary: The DCCT study showed that intensive therapy can reduce the risks of retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy in diabetic patients. This beneficial effect can persist long-term by maintaining near-normal glycemic levels. The concept of metabolic memory emphasizes the importance of early and strict glycemic control to limit the risk of complications.

Long-term population-based trends in the incidence of cardiovascular disease in individuals with type 1 diabetes from Finland: a retrospective, nationwide, cohort study

Valma Harjutsalo et al.

Summary: The cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with childhood onset type 1 diabetes has decreased over time in Finland, but there is still considerable excess risk compared to the general population. Research on the mechanisms of atherosclerosis starting from the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes is needed to facilitate early and effective prevention of cardiovascular disease in these individuals.

Diagnostic accuracy of oximetry for obstructive sleep apnea: a study on older adults in a home setting

Joao Carlos Fraga da Rosa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the accuracy of the oxyhemoglobin desaturation index (ODI) compared to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) using a portable monitor. The results showed a significant positive correlation between ODI and AHI, with high sensitivity and accuracy in identifying the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Oximetry is a promising strategy for diagnosing OSA.
