Smoking, use of smokeless tobacco, HLA genotypes and incidence of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults

Jessica Edstorp et al.

Summary: The study reveals that smoking and snus use are associated with a higher risk of LADA and type 2 diabetes, and smoking acts synergistically with HLA high-risk genotypes in the development of LADA.

Do gene-environment interactions have implications for the precision prevention of type 2 diabetes?

Thorkild I. A. Sorensen et al.

Summary: The rapid increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes globally in recent decades may be a result of diabetogenic environmental changes acting in conjunction with genetic predisposition. Behavioral modification focusing on weight loss, physical activity, and diet has been shown to delay or prevent the development of type 2 diabetes in high-risk individuals. Despite genetic differences, behavioral changes appear equally effective in reducing the incidence of type 2 diabetes, regardless of known genetic predisposition.

Lifestyle or Environmental Influences and Their Interaction With Genetic Susceptibility on the Risk of LADA

Sofia Carlsson

Summary: This review summarizes the literature on lifestyle factors associated with the risk of latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) and discusses their potential interaction with genetic susceptibility. The findings suggest that lifestyle factors promoting type 2 diabetes, such as obesity, sedentariness, low birth weight, and smoking, are implicated in the risk of LADA. Moreover, dietary factors including consumption of red meat, coffee, and sweetened beverages may increase the risk, while consumption of alcohol and omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking and obesity, appear to interact with human leukocyte antigen genes associated with autoimmunity, leading to a stronger effect on disease risk among those exposed to both factors. Lifestyle modification has the potential for preventing LADA, particularly for individuals with genetic susceptibility. However, further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore other risk factors, and intervention studies are required to assess causality.
