Depth distribution of organic carbon sources in Arctic Chukchi Sea sediments

Ann-Christine Zinkann et al.

Summary: Climate-induced changes in Chukchi Sea sediments can significantly impact carbon cycling, carbon sequestration, and food sources for benthic trophic levels. This study used stable carbon isotope biomarkers to identify the contributions of different primary producers to sediments and measured bacterial production under different temperature scenarios. The majority of organic matter in sediments came from terrestrial sources, while phytoplankton-derived organic matter decreased with increasing sediment depth. This study suggests that terrestrial and bacterial carbon sources may become more prominent in a future, warmer Arctic.

Mooring Measurements of Anadyr Current Nitrate, Phosphate, and Silicate Enable Updated Bering Strait Nutrient Flux Estimates

Tyler D. Hennon et al.

Summary: Using data collected from June 2017 to June 2018 at Anadyr Strait, this study estimates the monthly fluxes of nitrate, phosphate, and silicate from the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic Ocean through Bering Strait over the period 1997-2019. The study finds significant inter-annual variability in the fluxes, with the estimated values being about 50% higher than previous estimates. Increasing trends in phosphate and silicate fluxes are observed from 1998 to 2018, but the trend for nitrate is unclear.

The role of temperature on overwinter survival, condition metrics and lipid loss in juvenile polar cod (Boreogadus saida): A laboratory experiment

Louise A. Copeman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the winter bioenergetics, survival, and condition indices of juvenile polar cod under simulated winter conditions. The results showed that polar cod were more capable of conserving lipids and surviving at colder temperatures. They preferentially catabolized triacylglycerols from muscle tissue during the early stage of winter. The temperature-dependent declines in condition indices and lipid content were parameterized and developed into condition loss models. The lipid-based indices were found to be sensitive predictors of overwintering success for polar cod in changing summer and winter habitats.

Annual and spatial variation in the condition and lipid storage of juvenile Chukchi Sea gadids during a recent period of environmental warming (2012 to 2019).

Louise A. Copeman et al.

Summary: This study described the lipid content and fatty acid trophic markers in Arctic and sub-Arctic gadids, revealing interspecific differences in lipid storage. It was found that polar cod have a unique lipid profile compared to other gadids, which may be an adaptation to the Arctic environment.

Walleye Pollock breach the Bering Strait: A change of the cods in the arctic

Sharon Wildes et al.

Summary: This study used genetic techniques to identify cods in the Pacific Arctic and found evidence of distributional shifts and range expansions of cod species in response to changing climactic conditions, with cod and Arctic Cod moving northward during warmer conditions. The study also detected juvenile Arctic Cod in the Chukchi Sea, where they are not typically found.

Year-round distribution of bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus, throughout the Alaskan Chukchi and northern Bering Sea

Jessica L. Crance et al.

Summary: This study used passive acoustic recorders to monitor the calling activity of bearded seals and revealed their year-round spatio-temporal distribution and migration patterns in the Chukchi and Bering seas. The timing of calling activity corresponded with the known breeding season of the seals, but the cessation of calling occurred earlier each year due to earlier sea ice retreat. The sustained calling activity overwinter suggests a larger population than previously assumed. These findings are crucial for the effective management and conservation of bearded seals.

Winners and losers in a warming Arctic: Potential habitat gain and loss for epibenthic invertebrates of the Chukchi and Bering Seas, 2008-2100

Elizabeth A. Logerwell et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of ocean warming on the epibenthic invertebrate community in the Pacific Arctic Region. The results show that with continued increase in ocean temperatures, the thermal habitat for most taxa will decrease or even disappear, especially for the most vulnerable species. This study emphasizes the significance of protecting biodiversity and sustaining local communities in the Arctic region.

High-resolution biological net community production in the Pacific-influenced Arctic as constrained by O2/Ar and O2/N2 observations

Haley Cynar et al.

Summary: Spatial and temporal patterns of primary productivity in the Arctic are expected to change with warming. Historically, productivity measurements have been limited in spatial and temporal resolution. Recent advancements in measuring dissolved oxygen/argon ratios (O-2/Ar) and oxygen/nitrogen ratios (O-2/N-2) have provided higher resolution assessments of net community production (NCP). However, the accuracy of the O-2/N-2 approach is lower due to differences in solubility between oxygen and nitrogen.

Invader?s portrait: Biological characteristics of walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus in the western Chukchi Sea

Pavel O. Emelin et al.

Summary: Based on research conducted onboard Russian research vessels from 2003 to 2020, this study provides data on the size composition, age structure, sex ratio, maturity of gonads, and diet composition of walleye pollock in the western Chukchi Sea. The findings show that the population is dominated by juveniles and varies in size composition and maturity depending on the trawl method used. The presence of large females and the possibility of new spawning grounds indicate potential changes in the population dynamics of walleye pollock in this region. The study also highlights the importance of ongoing research and monitoring in understanding the impact of environmental changes on fish populations.

Methane seep communities on the Koryak slope in the Bering Sea

Elena Rybakova et al.

Summary: Methane seep communities were discovered on the Koryak slope in the Bering Sea. The species composition and community structure of these communities vary at different depths. The deepest seep communities have the highest species richness, while the shallower areas have lower species richness. Certain species in the seep communities are adapted to reducing habitats.

Strong and regionally distinct links between ice-retreat timing and phytoplankton production in the Arctic Ocean

Hongjun Song et al.

Summary: Recent rapid sea-ice changes in the Arctic Ocean have different regional impacts on phytoplankton bloom timing and primary productivity, with earlier and stronger blooms in shelf regions following earlier ice retreats and enhanced light availability, while weakened blooms and reduced primary production in the central Arctic, particularly in the Canada Basin, are attributed to a chain reaction triggered by earlier ice-melt and enhanced haline stratification. Recognizing and quantifying these regional links will improve projections of biogeochemical cycles and trophic flows in Arctic marine ecosystems.

Contrast of warm and cold phases in the Bering Sea to understand spatial distributions of Arctic and sub-Arctic gadids

Matthew R. Baker

Summary: This study examines the impact of climate change on Arctic gadids, focusing on species distribution shifts in warm and cold periods. It found that sub-Arctic species are more affected by environmental changes, while Arctic species are more constrained to specific geographic areas. Species with a demersal life history showed better tolerance to thermal conditions. These insights are crucial for understanding the responses of fish to changing ocean conditions in polar regions.
