Genetic identification of medicinally used Salacia species by nrDNA ITS sequences and a PCR-RFLP assay for authentication of Salacia-related health foods

Shu Zhu et al.

Summary: Salacia species have been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for various purposes. This study aims to authenticate these plants and determine the sources of commercially available Salacia-derived products using genetic approaches. Results showed that S. reticulata and S. chinensis are major sources of these products, and a PCR-RFLP assay was established for their identification.

Evolution of apetaly in the cosmopolitan genus Stellaria

Mathew T. Sharples et al.

Summary: Apetaly, the absence of petals, is common in distantly related lineages of flowering plants and is associated with self-pollination. The genus Stellaria has many lineages that have lost petals, and apetalous species of Stellaria tend to exhibit higher levels of selfing. Field experiments show that petal loss in Stellaria may be linked with self-pollination worldwide.

Complete chloroplast genomes of Impatiens cyanantha and Impatiens monticola: Insights into genome structures, mutational hotspots, comparative and phylogenetic analysis with its congeneric species

Chao Luo et al.

Summary: The study focused on comparing chloroplast genomes of two Impatiens species found at different altitudes, revealing minor changes in lengths but similar gene content and order among them. Various genes and regions were identified as suitable for species identification and phylogenetic studies. Positive selection was observed in certain genes between different populations of the same species, providing valuable genomic resources for understanding the systematics and evolution of Impatiens in different altitudes.

Eunuchs or Females? Causes and Consequences of Gynodioecy on Morphology, Ploidy, and Ecology of Stellaria graminea L. (Caryophyllaceae)

Jaromir Kucera et al.

Summary: The study found that gynodioecy leads to divergence in flower morphology between females and hermaphrodites in Stellaria graminea, likely due to sexual selection. Contrary to expectations, gynodioecy occurs evenly in diploids and tetraploids, indicating it was not involved in the establishment of polyploids. Both diploid and tetraploid females have larger genomes than hermaphrodites, suggesting the presence of sex chromosomes, and ecology differs between cytotypes and sexes, indirectly linked to the presence of females due to other aspects of the species' life history.
