Convergent evolution of a blood-red nectar pigment in vertebrate-pollinated flowers

Rahul Roy et al.

Summary: The red color of Nesocodon mauritianus' nectar is derived from a previously undescribed alkaloid called nesocodin. Three enzymes secreted into the nectar are necessary or sufficient for pigment production. The study also found that synthetic nesocodin is attractive to the most likely pollinator, Phelsuma geckos, and identified nesocodin in the red nectar of the distantly related Jaltomata herrerae, which is visited by hummingbirds.

Amino acids metabolism as a source for aroma volatiles biosynthesis

Itay Maoz et al.

Summary: Aroma volatiles are crucial for plant ecological fitness and reproduction, as they are involved in various interactions and communications with other organisms. Amino acids and their derivatives play a vital role in the biosynthesis of plant volatiles. Different plants employ different strategies and pathways to produce aroma volatiles, and the enzymes located at the primary-specialized metabolism interface are of utmost importance. Biotechnology has the potential to enhance the quality and production of agricultural produce through manipulation of this interface.

Sweet solutions: nectar chemistry and quality

Susan W. Nicolson

Summary: The composition and concentration of nectar, the main floral reward for pollinators, vary greatly. Nectar quality is not solely determined by sugar concentration, but also by various non-sugar components such as amino acids and secondary metabolites. These components play important roles in the nutrition, health, and disease prevention of pollinators. Additionally, the water component of nectar, which is often overlooked, is also crucial. Nectar properties are influenced by environmental factors, pollinator visits, and microbial contamination. The ability of pollinators to adapt to and benefit from the variation and diversity in nectar chemistry is vital for pollination mutualisms.

Conserved pigment pathways underpin the dark insectiform floral structures of sexually deceptive Chiloglottis (Orchidaceae)

Darren C. J. Wong et al.

Summary: Sexually deceptive plants attract specific male insects for pollination by mimicking their characteristics. This study investigated the flower color biochemistry and gene expression patterns in different groups of the sexually deceptive orchid genus Chiloglottis using chemical and transcriptome analysis. The results showed that the dark calli/callus structures in these plants have conserved biochemical basis across the genus, but there are differences in the proportion of methoxylated anthocyanin and flavonol glycoside derivatives and gene expression levels between the Reflexa/Formicifera clades and the Valida clade.

Summary: Plants use both chemical and structural means to appear colorful. In this study, we investigate the formation of diffraction gratings on the petal surface by studying a novel model system, Hibiscus trionum, and different species of Hibiscus. We find that the chemical composition of the cuticle plays a crucial role in restricting the formation of diffraction gratings to the pigmented region of the petal.

A Semivolatile Floral Scent Marks the Shift to a Novel Pollination System in Bromeliads

Paulo Milet-Pinheiro et al.

Summary: Perfume flowers produce intense scents to attract euglossine males as pollinators, with some exceptions like Cryptanthus attracting males despite not emitting noticeable scents. Chemical communication between flowers and pollinators plays a crucial role in the evolution of plant pollination strategies, with semivolatile compounds like copalol identified as key scent triggers. These findings suggest that semivolatile-mediated pollinator attraction may be more common than previously thought in plant species lacking noticeable floral scents.

Identification of anthocyanin and other flavonoids from the green-blue petals of Puya alpestris (Bromeliaceae) and a clarification of their coloration mechanism

Takayuki Mizuno et al.

Summary: The unique green-blue color of Puya alpestris flowers is developed through the presence of anthocyanin, flavonols, flavones, and chlorophyll. The color gradient on the petals is due to high quantities of these pigment components at the tip, resulting in green-blue color at the tip and blue at the base. The blue color expression is the result of intermolecular copigmentation between anthocyanin and flavones, while the yellow color expression is attributed to the flavonols under relatively high pH conditions.

Changes at a Critical Branchpoint in the Anthocyanin Biosynthetic Pathway Underlie the Blue to Orange Flower Color Transition in Lysimachia arvensis

Mercedes Sanchez-Cabrera et al.

Summary: Anthocyanins play a crucial role in determining flower color diversity in angiosperms, with differential expression of specific structural and regulatory genes identified in blue- and orange-petaled individuals of Lysimachia arvensis. The shift from blue to orange petals is associated with changes in expression of key genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, as well as amino acid substitutions in enzymes affecting substrate specificity. This study highlights the complex genetic and physiological consequences of flower color polymorphism in L. arvensis.

An unusual tricosatriene is crucial for male fungus gnat attraction and exploitation by sexually deceptive Pterostylis orchids

Tobias Hayashi et al.

Summary: The study identified a mixture of five hydrocarbons shared between Pterostylis orbiculata orchids and female Mycomya sp. fungus gnats, including an undescribed triene compound that was confirmed to be (6Z,9Z)-1,6,9-tricosatriene. Field bioassays showed that this triene, along with other hydrocarbons, elicited attraction and sexual behavior from male gnats, indicating its importance as a key component in orchid pollinator attraction and female fungus gnat sex pheromones. This suggests that long-chain unsaturated hydrocarbons play a crucial role in sexual deception in Pterostylis orchids and provide a valuable insight into deciphering female fungus gnat sex pheromones.
