Effect of relative social rank within a social hierarchy on neural activation in response to familiar or unfamiliar social signals

Summary: In this study, mice were exposed to urine from familiar and unfamiliar dominant and subordinate males, and neural cFos immunoreactivity was assessed in different brain regions. The posteroventral medial amygdala was found to respond exclusively to dominant male urine. Other brain regions showed activity modulation based on odor familiarity and the social status of the urine donor and recipient. Dominant mice exhibited stronger differential activity in response to different cues compared to subordinate mice, suggesting differences in how individuals perceive social cues based on social experience.
