Structural Origins of Elastic and 2D Plastic Flexibility of Molecular Crystals Investigated with Two Polymorphs of Conformationally Rigid Coumarin

Keke Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical behaviors of two polymorphs of the structurally rigid molecule coumarin, revealing that form I crystals exhibit high elasticity while form II crystals are 2D plastic and twistable. The differences in mechanical behaviors are attributed to the molecular packing and interactions of coumarin rather than molecular flexibility.

Organic Molecular Crystals with Dual Stress-Induced Mechanical Response: Elastic and Plastic Flexibility

Poonam Gupta et al.

Summary: The shift in interest from crystal structure to mechanical property among crystal engineering researchers has led to a better understanding of molecular packing, intermolecular interactions, and mechanical behavior. It has been observed that certain molecular crystals exhibit both elastic and plastic flexibility, attributed to the presence of flexible pi interactions and slip systems, while benzamide crystals are found to be brittle materials. This highlights the impact of molecular packing and intermolecular interactions on the mechanical properties of solid crystalline materials under stress.

Phase-transition-induced jumping, bending, and wriggling of single crystal nanofibers of coronene

Ken Takazawa et al.

Summary: Organic crystals may crack or jump suddenly when heated, with recent studies showing that coronene nanofibers exhibit a new type of ultrafast motion when cooled and subsequently heated. This unique motion is caused by a fast structural phase transition between two polymorphs of coronene, leading to dynamical instability and large deformation in the nanofibers. The finding demonstrates a novel mechanism for ultrafast organic crystal deformation.
