Summary: This study evaluated the effects of lipids incorporation on the water resistance of composite biodegradable films. Paraffin wax, beeswax, and paraffin oil were found to improve water vapor permeability and surface hydrophobicity. Among them, the film containing 15% beeswax showed the best water resistance performance. Additionally, different lipids incorporation altered the morphology of the composite film and enhanced the molecular interactions between the film components.

Nanostructured superior oil-adsorbent nanofiber composites using one-step electrospinning of polyvinylidene fluoride/nanocellulose

Summary: A reusable, porous, and highly efficient nanofiber composite based on PVDF/CNC was obtained via one-step fabrication method. The incorporation of CNC significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite, and the adjustable humidity resulted in the formation of a large number of nano-micro spheres on the surface and interconnected porous structure inside the fibers. The composite exhibited a high adsorption capacity for engine oil and retained over 95% adsorption capability for toluene after ten cycles.

Antifungal whey protein films activated with low quantities of water soluble chitosan

Summary: The aim of this study was to develop antifungal films from whey protein isolate and a water-soluble chitosan derivative, which showed excellent fungistatic and barrier effects against fungus strains associated with food spoilage. The chitosan derivative acted as a crosslinking agent via hydrogen bonding with whey proteins, reducing solubility and elongation of the films. Despite an increase in surface hydrophobicity, there were no improvements in mechanical resistance or water vapor barrier.

Summary: This study introduced a simple method for preparing oil-in-water lavender essential oil nano-emulsions (LEONs) with excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities, and successfully incorporated them into gelatin matrix to fabricate multifunctional films. The films exhibited strong antibacterial properties, excellent antioxidant activities, sustained release, UV light barrier, and heat-sealing properties. When applied to preserving cherry tomatoes, the GL-LEONs films effectively suppressed deterioration, reducing weight loss, delaying degradation, and inhibiting microbial growth during storage.
