Structure of surface oxides on martensitic steel under simultaneous ion irradiation and molten LBE corrosion

Cunfeng Yao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of irradiation on the corrosion process of steels in molten lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). The results show that ion irradiation not only accelerates corrosion, but also significantly modifies the structure of surface oxides. A possible mechanism is proposed to explain the microstructure evolution of oxides under simultaneous irradiation and corrosion.

Effects of pre-exposure and simulated corrosion pits on liquid metal embrittlement of T91 steel exposed to liquid lead-bismuth eutectic at 350 °C

Xing Gong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pre-exposure and simulated uneven corrosion pitting on liquid metal embrittlement (LME) of T91 ferritic/martensitic steel exposed to liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). The results showed that the presence of a pit could greatly promote LME occurrence, leading to typical quasicleavage on the fracture surface. Stress simulation revealed that the pit induced a strong stress concentration effect, resulting in premature failure of oxide scales and earlier LME crack initiation. The study emphasized the importance of considering the LME enhancement effect of uneven corrosion in reactor system design, especially for thin-walled tubes and under transient conditions.

Effect of Y2O3 addition on the microstructure and liquid LBE cavitation erosion behaviors of Fe-Cr-Al-Ti-C-xY2O3 laser clade coatings

Hongyi Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe-Cr-Al-Ti-C coatings were synthesized with different Y2O3 additions by laser cladding to improve toughness and cavitation erosion resistance. The addition of Y2O3 modified the distribution of TiC and played a toughening role. Optimal addition of Y2O3 resulted in the highest hardness and adhesive strength of the coating, improving its resistance to LBE cavitation erosion.

Corrosion behavior of T91 steel in liquid lead-bismuth eutectic at 550 °C: Effects of exposure time and dissolved oxygen concentration

Zhaoguang Zhu et al.

Summary: The long-term corrosion behavior of T91 steel in static liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 550 degrees Celsius and different dissolved oxygen concentrations was investigated. It was found that the oxide film formed in oxygen-saturated LBE consists of multiple substances. The thickness of the oxide film significantly reduces with decreasing dissolved oxygen concentration, and dissolution corrosion and intergranular penetration were observed.

Liquid metal embrittlement susceptibility of an oxide-dispersion strengthened FeCrAl alloy in contact with liquid lead-bismuth eutectic at 350?C

Haibin Ma et al.

Summary: The liquid metal embrittlement (LME) susceptibility of an oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) Fe14Cr4.5Al0.5Y2O3 alloy in lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 350 degrees C was investigated using slow strain rate tensile tests. The results showed that LME occurred in the alloy regardless of the oxygen concentration in LBE, but an oxygen-rich condition resulted in smaller cleavage areas on fracture surfaces compared to an oxygen-poor condition. Interestingly, deep secondary cracks were observed in all specimens tested in both oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor LBE, which were caused by LME-induced cracking of the (prior) elongated grain boundaries formed during hot rotary swaging.

Jiuguo Deng et al.

Summary: A refractory high-entropy alloy (HEA) coating, prepared by magnetron sputtering, showed good integrity and significantly mitigated the corrosion of ferritic/martensitic steel by lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at high temperature. The low solubility of the coating composition elements and the limitation of element out-diffusion or segregation contributed to the corrosion resistance.
