Synchrotron-based near ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical studies of passivation behavior of N- and V-containing martensitic stainless steel

Xiaoqi Yue et al.

Summary: The passivation behavior of a N-and V-containing martensite stainless steel was investigated using synchrotron-based near ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical analyses, and thermodynamic calculation. The passive film consists of inner layer with Cr3+, Fe(2, 3)+, and V(2, 3, 4)+ oxides, and outer layer with Cr3+ and Fe3+ hydroxides. Austenitization at 1080 oC facilitates the transformation of CrN to Cr2O3 and enrichment of Cr3+ oxide in the passive film. Higher Cl- concentration leads to film dissolution, increasing the level of point defects and fraction of remaining V oxides in the passive film.

In situ quantitative analysis of electrochemical oxide film development on metal surfaces using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy: Industrial alloys

Alfred Larsson et al.

Summary: In this study, Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy combined with an electrochemical setup was used to investigate the electrochemical oxide growth on an industrial Ni-Cr-Mo alloy in situ. The native oxide film was found to be 11.4 Å thick and rich in Cr3+. Under 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte, anodic growth of the oxide film at potentials up to 700 mV vs Ag/AgCl nearly doubled its thickness.

The anisotropy electrochemical corrosion behavior of Ni-based single crystal superalloy on different crystal planes: An investigation from the film growth aspect

Y. X. Liu et al.

Summary: The study compared the electrochemical corrosion and passivation behaviors of DD5 Ni-based single crystal superalloy with different crystal orientations. Results showed that the dissolution rates and passive film growth rates varied among different crystal planes, with the passive film growing faster and denser on surfaces with higher surface energy.

Thickness and composition of native oxides and near-surface regions of Ni superalloys

Alfred Larsson et al.

Summary: The surface chemistry and thickness distribution of three Ni superalloys were investigated using synchrotron X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and X-ray Reflectivity. The results showed variations in the composition and thickness of the oxide, hydroxide, and sub-surface layer, which were correlated with the thermodynamic properties of the metal elements in the alloys.

Influence of γ/γ′ morphology evolution on the mechanical properties of Ni-based single crystal superalloys formed by laser metal deposition

J. C. Guo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the variation in hardness and tensile properties of Ni-based single crystal superalloy DD6 during laser metal deposition processing, with a focus on the effects of laser scanning velocity and post heat-treatment on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties. It was found that heat treatment reduces the mechanical properties of the deposited sample by introducing stray grains that disrupt the original single crystallinity.

Investigating the Role of Mo and Cr during the Activation and Passivation of Ni-Based Alloys in Acidic Chloride Solution

Jeffrey D. Henderson et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing Mo content can improve the alloy's ability to recover from surface activation, leading to quicker and more stable spontaneous passivation for Mo-rich alloys. During electrochemically-assisted passivation, some Mo was removed and Cr oxides accumulated at the surface, but the barrier layer properties were not dictated by Cr content.

First-principles calculations of metal surfaces. I. Slab-consistent bulk reference for convergent surface properties

Peter A. Schultz

Summary: This study presents a method for accurately calculating the surfaces of metals through slab calculations, utilizing an independently computed bulk reference to ensure convergent surface formation energies. The method also provides realistic uncertainties to understand the nonlinear divergence in surface formation energy with slab thickness. The accuracy of the method is demonstrated on relaxed, unreconstructed low-index aluminum surfaces with slabs up to 35 layers.
