A numerical study on chloride transport in alkali-activated fly ash/slag concretes

Qing-feng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-phase, multi-component ionic numerical model is developed to investigate the chloride transport in alkali-activated fly ash/slag (AAFS) concretes. The results indicate that the slag content and the water to binder ratio are the dominant factors affecting chloride penetration and corrosion initiation time of steel bars in AAFS concretes.

Hydration and phase development of recycled cement

Jose Alexandre Bogas et al.

Summary: This study provides an in-depth analysis of the rehydration behavior of recycled cement obtained by thermally activating waste cementitious materials. The study reveals that recycled cement shows a significant hydration rate after 24 hours, with a longer induction period and a late acceleration peak compared to Portland cement. The analysis also shows early development of certain phases in recycled cement paste. Additionally, the study identifies the main phase in anhydrous recycled cement and indicates a higher degree of hydration in the recycled cement paste at 28 days but a lower total volume of long-term hydrates.

Evaluation of rheology and strength development of alkali-activated slag with different silicates sources

Yubo Sun et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed investigation on the reproducibility of two groups of alkali-activated slag mixtures, focusing on both fresh properties and strength development. The results show that AAS pastes prepared with different sodium silicate solutions exhibit similar reaction kinetics, fresh properties, and strength development. However, AAS pastes made of silica fume show faster reaction and inferior rheology and strength compared to those prepared with sodium silicate solutions. This study also demonstrates the feasibility of making the same AAS paste using different types of commercial sodium silicate solutions.

Physico-mechanical, thermal properties and durability of foamed geopolymer concrete containing cenospheres

Jinyan Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, cenospheres were used to replace part of fly ash in order to prepare ultra-lightweight foamed geopolymer concrete. The results showed that the addition of cenospheres improved the fluidity, setting time, mechanical properties, and thermal insulation performance of the geopolymer foams. It also improved the pore structure and reduced the sorptivity and drying shrinkage of the UFGC samples.

Drying shrinkage characteristics and mechanism primary exploration of MgO-slag mortars

Hongqiang Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different types and contents of MgO on the properties of MgO-slag mortars and pastes, as well as the mechanism of drying shrinkage. The results show that increasing MgO activities and contents can decrease the setting time and increase the compressive strength. The compressive strength advantage of high-activity MgO is mainly seen in the early stage, while higher contents of S-MgO exhibit higher compressive strength advantage in the later stage. Additionally, the study finds that intraparticle porosity, interparticle porosity, and MgO particle size are important factors affecting the drying shrinkage. These findings provide valuable insights for the preparation of cementing materials with no length change using MgO activator.

Drying shrinkage performance of Medium-Ca alkali-activated fly ash and slag pastes

Dunwen Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reason why the drying shrinkage of alkali-activated fly ash and slag (AAFS) paste is more significant than that of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) paste. It is found that the long-term progress of drying shrinkage mainly depends on the viscous behaviors of the gel under capillary pore pressure. The closure of micropores and gel rearrangement in AAFS paste are more severe, resulting in obvious creep of the paste.

Mechanical and microstructural properties of alkali-activated fly ash-slag material under sustained moderate temperature effect

Hongqiang Ma et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical and microscopic properties of alkali-activated fly ash-slag (AAFS) materials under sustained moderate temperature effects. The results show that AAFS can maintain compressive strength even at 250 degrees C and N-A-S-H gel exhibits greater thermal stability than C-A-S-H and C-S-H gels. The study provides experimental and theoretical basis for the application of alkali-activated materials subjected to sustained moderate temperature effects.

Study on the chloride ion transport mechanism of recycled mixed aggregate concrete based on evolution characteristics of pore structure

Chao Zhu et al.

Summary: The difference in pore structure characteristics is the fundamental reason for the different chloride ion transport mechanisms between recycled mixed aggregate (RMA) concrete and ordinary concrete. The study showed that the hydration layer wrapping brick aggregate prevents chloride ions from penetrating, impacting the transport performance. New mortar has weaker anti-chloride ion transport performance compared to mortar attached to brick aggregate due to the presence of more capillary and large pores.

Strength development and microstructure of sustainable geopolymers made from alkali-activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag, calcium carbide residue, and red mud

Qiang An et al.

Summary: This study utilized alkali-activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag and wet-basis calcium carbide residue stabilized red mud to prepare geopolymers material. The utilization of alkali activator improved the compressive and flexural strength of geopolymers. The microstructural analysis revealed the formation of calcium aluminate hydrates and calcium silicate hydrates, contributing to the increased strength. The leaching experiment showed that toxic heavy metals levels were below the test limits, confirming the safety and feasibility of the prepared geopolymers.

Effect of active MgO on the hydration kinetics characteristics and microstructures of alkali-activated fly ash-slag materials

Hongqiang Ma et al.

Summary: The effects of active S-MgO contents, MgO types, Na2O concentrations, and alkali activator modulus on the properties of AAFS were investigated. The addition of active S-MgO reduced the total hydration heat of AAFS, while the addition of R-MgO increased it significantly. The Krstulovic-Dabic model was not completely suitable for the hydration reaction process. The addition of active MgO decreased the amount of unreacted raw materials, increased the pore volume, and enriched the micromorphology of hydration products.
