Influence of milling parameters on the properties of ground coal bottom ash and its blended cement

Chee Ban Cheah et al.

Summary: Coal bottom ash (CBA), a by-product of coal thermal power plants, can be used as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in concrete. Pulverizing CBA enhances its pozzolanic properties. This study aims to establish optimized milling parameters for producing high-quality CBA for use in blended cement. The results show that pulverizing CBA for 5 hours at 70 RPM with a CBA to instantaneous media ratio of 1.5:10 exhibits optimum performance.

Effect of supplementary cementitious materials on viscosity of cement-based pastes

Ivan Navarrete et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of particle size, type of SCM, and their interactions with main mixture parameters on the viscosity of cementitious paste. The results indicate that φT has a greater impact on viscosity than particle size and interparticle force of the cementitious particles.

Properties of ternary blended cement containing ground granulated blast furnace slag and ground coal bottom ash

Cheah Chee Ban et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the physical and mechanical properties of cement containing ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and ground coal bottom ash (GCBA) at various cement replacement ratios. The optimum cement replacement level with GCBA was found to be 10%. Additionally, the appropriate binder combination ratio and dosage of superplasticizer were crucial for ternary blended paste. In conclusion, the incorporation of GCBA in combination with GGBS enhanced both the mechanical and physical properties compared to GGBS binary blended cement mortar.

Study on compatibility of poplar wood and Portland cement

Yixu Yang et al.

Summary: It was found in the study that water-soluble polysaccharides and organic carboxylic acid in poplar wood affect the hydration process of Portland cement, leading to an anti-setting effect. The addition of calcium chloride and sodium silicate can improve the compatibility of Portland cement and poplar, enhancing the quality of decorative materials.

Turning sandstone clay into supplementary cementitious material: activation and pozzolanic reactivity evaluation

Yubin Cao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the transformation of waste sandstone clay into high quality SCM through thermal activation. Activated sandstone clays (ASCs) showed high pozzolanic reactivity and can be used as SCM with rich mineral structure and pozzolanic activity. The study confirmed that even short time calcination improved the pozzolanic reactivity of ASCs, making them suitable for use in cementitious materials.

Risk assessment of human exposure to heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and radionuclides in oil-based drilling cutting residues used for roadbed materials in Chongqing, China

Deming Xiong et al.

Summary: The study found that OBDCRs contain carcinogenic contaminants such as benzopyrene (a), diphenylanthracene (a, h), and petroleum hydrocarbons exceeding standard limits, as well as heavy metals like Cu, Zn, As, and Ni above 50% of standard limits. Direct use of OBDCRs in roadbed materials results in high total carcinogenic risk values and an average absorbed dose rate over 80 nGy/h, posing significant environmental and health risks. It is crucial to establish legal standards and liability for the utilization of OBDCRs as solid waste resources to mitigate these risks.

Impact of co-processing sewage sludge on cement kiln NOx emissions reduction

Yunhui Gu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally analyzed changes in NOx concentration in a cement kiln simulation with sewage sludge additions under different temperature and oxygen content levels. It found that the most significant reduction of NOx emission was achieved at 900 degrees C and 3% oxygen content level, mainly due to the conversion of NOx to N-2 by reducing substances released via the decomposition of free ammonia and protein in sludge. The study also demonstrated the effectiveness of adding sewage sludge to the precalciner in reducing NOx emissions during the co-processing in cement kilns.
