Effect of bentonite slurry on the function of foam for changing the permeability characteristics of sand under high hydraulic gradients

Fanlin Ling et al.

Summary: During earth pressure balance shield tunnelling in sandy ground, foam and other conditioning agents are injected to reduce permeability of muck. The study found that a low bentonite slurry injection ratio enhanced the workability of foam-conditioned sand and had a significant effect on permeability.

Effect of foam conditioning on performance of EPB shield tunnelling through laboratory excavation test

Hyobum Lee et al.

Summary: An appropriate application of a soil conditioning strategy during an earth pressure balance (EPB) shield operation is crucial for reducing downtime and improving the hydro-mechanical properties of the muck. This study aims to simulate EPB tunnelling and investigate the effects of ground and foam injection conditions through laboratory-scale excavation tests. The results show that the suggested laboratory excavation test can be used to qualitatively evaluate the effects of basic soil properties and foam injection conditions on EPB shield tunnelling.

Research on optimizing performance of desulfurization-gypsum-based composite cementitious materials based on response surface method

Yinsheng Zhou et al.

Summary: Desulfurization-gypsum-based composite cementitious materials were prepared and evaluated for their mechanical properties and water resistance. The study found that both individual factors and interactions between factors affected the strength and water resistance of the materials. The composition of hydration products and the microstructure of the hardened body were investigated to explain the influence mechanism. The optimal contents of sulfoaluminate cement, mineral powder, and quicklime were determined.

Effect of calcium ions on bentonite network structure

Shiya Du et al.

Summary: This study systematically characterized the network structure of bentonite under different conditions and found that the stability of the network structure increased and then decreased with the concentration of calcium ions. The aggregates became denser and more compact as the concentration of calcium ions increased, while the size of the network structure first increased and then slightly decreased. The proposed evolution modes of bentonite network structure with increasing calcium ion concentration can be used as a guideline for controlling clay minerals in flotation.

Compression performance analysis of multi-scale modified concrete based on response surface method

Haoxiang He et al.

Summary: In this study, a method of adding various materials to concrete to improve its multi-scale defects was proposed. Through experiments and analysis, the optimal material contents were determined to enhance the performance of the concrete. The results of the study showed that adding steel fibers and PVA fibers can improve the performance of concrete, while adding rubber particles can enhance its deformation capacity and reduce peak stress and toughness.

Strain-based reliability analysis of dented pipelines using a response surface method

Ahmed K. Abdelmoety et al.

Summary: This paper performs a strain-based reliability analysis on pipe dent defects using a response surface method. The study considers different pipe configurations, lengths, indenter sizes, and dent depths. It is found that the probability of failure (POF) of dent defects is highly related to the maximum equivalent plastic strains generated in the dent. The dent depth criterion used in engineering practice may lead to inconsistent reliability levels.

Mechanical performance and optimization of high-volume fly ash concrete containing plastic wastes and graphene nanoplatelets using response surface methodology

Musa Adamu et al.

Summary: The study found that plastic waste and graphene nanoplatelets have a significant impact on the properties of high-volume fly ash concrete, with plastic waste and fly ash reducing the strength and water absorption of the concrete, while graphene nanoplatelets enhance them.
