Diversity, distribution and extinction risk of native freshwater fishes of South Africa

Albert Chakona et al.

Summary: According to the assessments conducted in 2016 and the present study, 36% of South Africa's freshwater fish species are threatened, with 67% of the threatened species concentrated in the Cape Fold Ecoregion. Invasive fish species, deterioration of water quality, excessive water abstraction, land use changes, and modification of riverine habitats are major threats to the native freshwater fishes of the country. Accurate delimitation of species boundaries, mapping distribution ranges, understanding pressure factors, and long-term monitoring of population trends are essential for the 2026 IUCN threat status assessments and the designation of National Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas.

Monitoring extinction risk and threats of the world's fishes based on the Sampled Red List Index

Rafael Miranda et al.

Summary: Global biodiversity targets require monitoring of species at risk and quantifying biodiversity trends. This study uses the Red List Index (RLI) to analyze the conservation status of world fishes in 2010. The results show that 15.1% of sampled species are threatened with extinction, with fishing being the main threat for marine species and pollution from agriculture and forestry effluents for freshwater fishes.

A metric for spatially explicit contributions to science-based species targets

Louise Mair et al.

Summary: The STAR metric quantifies contributions from abating threats and restoring habitats to reducing species' extinction risk in specific locations. Sustainable crop production and forestry dominate in contributing to total STAR values for amphibians, birds, and mammals, while Key Biodiversity Areas cover 9% of the terrestrial surface but capture 47% of STAR values.

Bending the curve: Operationalizing national Red Lists to customize conservation actions to reduce extinction risk

Magni Olsen Kyrkjeeide et al.

Summary: The text discusses how human activities are accelerating the loss of biodiversity, and the need to translate international goals into national actions. The authors propose a framework and index to operationalize national Red Lists, providing quantifiable objectives for conservation efforts. While achieving national goals may be difficult, it is still possible if main constraints are addressed.
