Land use and land cover change in a tropical mountain landscape of northern Ecuador: Altitudinal patterns and driving forces

Paulina Guarderas et al.

Summary: This study used the DPSIR framework to analyze land use changes in the northern Ecuadorian Andes. The results showed significant expansion of floriculture and urban areas in agricultural land, a stable trend in paramo, and a reduction of montane forests. The study also found that topographic factors were the main drivers of land use changes.

Aerodynamics Effect of Holes in UAV Wings Modified for VTOL Capability

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Peruvian Amazon disappearing: Transformation of protected areas during the last two decades (2001-2019) and potential future deforestation modelling using cloud computing and MaxEnt approach

Alexander Cotrina Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study quantified forest cover loss under Protected Areas (PAs) and their buffer zones in the Peruvian Amazon over the last 20 years. Potential deforestation risk zones were identified using predictive modeling, showing high forest cover losses within PAs and buffer zones, mainly in the central and southwestern parts of the region.

Geographical sampling bias on the assessment of endemism areas for marine meiobenthic fauna

Andre Garraffoni et al.

Summary: The study found that distribution patterns of marine meiobenthic species respond to geographical barriers and abiotic features, with higher species richness differences observed in the Southern Hemisphere than in the Northern Hemisphere. Delimitation of 20 areas of endemism using Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity revealed that most are located in the Northern Hemisphere, and future increases in sampling efforts may change the spatial congruence ranges in the Southern Hemisphere, while patterns for the Northern Hemisphere are expected to be more resilient.

Climate change reshapes the eco-evolutionary dynamics of a Neotropical seed dispersal system

Lilian P. Sales et al.

Summary: This study forecasted the impact of climate change and frugivory interactions on the spatial distribution and seed size evolution of a Neotropical palm species, showing that future climate change and deforestation may reduce the palm's suitable distribution. However, majority of the remaining suitable distribution is inaccessible to the palm without active seed dispersal by frugivores, and changes in frugivore communities may lead to evolution towards smaller seeds for the plant.

How deregulation, drought and increasing fire impact Amazonian biodiversity

Xiao Feng et al.

Summary: Biodiversity in the Amazon Basin is vital for ecological and climatic stability, however, it is increasingly threatened by deforestation and fires. This study quantifies the impacts of deforestation and fires on Amazonian biodiversity over the past two decades. Results show that deforestation leads to habitat loss and fires exacerbate the already substantial impact. Forest policies play a crucial role in reducing fire occurrences and preserving biodiversity in the Amazon.

Combined impacts of climate and land use change and the future restructuring of Neotropical bat biodiversity

Fernando Goncalves et al.

Summary: Forecasting the effects of global change on Neotropical bat diversity is crucial, as climate change and land-use changes can significantly impact habitat suitability and species distribution. Habitat specialists, especially frugivores, are more likely to experience range contraction, while habitat generalists may expand and homogenize bat communities across the region. Dispersal is key for the future of Neotropical bat diversity, highlighting the importance of safeguarding refugia and connecting protected areas to facilitate species movement in response to global change.
