Non-Newtonian Endothelial Shear Stress Simulation: Does It Matter?

Vikas Thondapu et al.

Summary: Patient-specific coronary endothelial shear stress (ESS) calculations were performed using Newtonian and non-Newtonian rheological models. The non-Newtonian model estimated higher ESS values and offered additional information for detecting underlying atherosclerosis.

Quantifying the non-Newtonian effects of pulsatile hemodynamics in tubes

K. Giannokostas et al.

Summary: In this study, the TEVP model was used to simulate pulsatile blood flow in straight tubes, accurately reproducing experimental results and providing reliable predictions for pressure, stress, and velocity fields. The research found that streamwise normal stress has a significant effect on RBCs and their aggregates, which cannot be predicted by traditional inelastic hemorheological models. The TEVP model accurately predicted phase-lags between pressure-gradient and flow-rate, demonstrating its physical completeness and robustness.

Erythrocyte-erythrocyte aggregation dynamics under shear flow

Mehdi Abbasi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the aggregation and rheological impact of red blood cells under different flow conditions, revealing four different types of doublet configurations and dynamics. Furthermore, the role of membrane tank-treading in doublet disaggregation is emphasized, along with the stability of doublets formed by adhesion even under strong shear rates. The normalized effective viscosity of doublet suspension is shown to significantly increase with adhesion energy, potentially influencing blood perfusion in microcirculation.

In silico biophysics and hemorheology of blood hyperviscosity syndrome

Elahe Javadi et al.

Summary: Hyperviscosity syndrome is characterized by a significant increase in blood viscosity, leading to circulation disturbances, and is associated with elevated plasma proteins and abnormal red blood cell properties. The study found that cell-related factors have a lesser impact on blood viscosity at high shear rates, while they are more prominent at high hematocrit levels.

Effect of stenosis and dilatation on the hemodynamic parameters associated with left coronary artery

Sreelakshmi Sandeep et al.

Summary: This study aims to examine the curvature effects of stenosis/dilatation region in the left coronary artery. Significant influences of non-Newtonian effects on blood viscosity and flow recirculation downstream of stenosis are found. The study also highlights the impact of wall deformation caused by flexible walls on wall shear stress and pressure drop.
