Influence of wing crack propagation on the failure process and strength of fractured specimens

Hengtao Yang et al.

Summary: This study explores the correlation between wing crack propagation and the peak strength of specimens through compression tests and numerical simulations. The results show that specimens with prefabricated wing cracks exhibit more plasticity during the loading process, while the length of the prefabricated wing cracks does not affect the peak strength of the specimen.

Failure mechanisms and damage evolution of hard rock joints under high stress: Insights from PFC2D modeling

Fanzhen Meng et al.

Summary: Discrete element modeling using 2D Particle Flow Code (PFC) sheds light on the failure mechanism and damage evolution of hard rock joints under high stress conditions. The study found that higher normal stress and rougher joints lead to more micro-cracks. The development rate of micro-cracks is influenced by joint roughness and stress levels.

Investigating the Effects of Cement and Polymer Grouting on the Shear Behavior of Rock Joints

Milad Abolfazli et al.

Summary: This study compared the shear behavior of cement grouting and chemical grouting (using epoxy and polyurethane) and found that grouting improves the shear strength and cohesion of rock joints. Cement grouts exhibit brittle behavior while chemical grouts are more ductile. The friction angle increases with larger joint size due to the distribution of random peaks and valleys on the joint surface.

Shear behaviour of 3D nonpersistent jointed rock-like specimens: Experiment and numerical simulation

Ri-hong Cao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the shear failure behavior of 3D nonpersistent jointed rock masses through laboratory tests and numerical simulations. The results show that the shear strength, cohesion, and friction angle decrease with increasing joint persistence. A 3D DEM model with nonpersistent joints is established and the numerical results are consistent with the laboratory results. The crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence on the joint specimens are analyzed at the microscale.

Experimental and numerical study on failure characteristics and mechanism of coal under different quasi-static loading rates

Xuewei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanical strength and failure characteristics of coal samples were investigated through experiments and numerical simulation. It was found that the strength parameters of the coal samples increase rapidly at first and then slow down as the loading rate increases. The failure mode and strain distribution also change with increasing loading rate.

3D DEM simulations of monotonic interface behaviour between cohesionless sand and rigid wall of different roughness

A. Grabowski et al.

Summary: This paper presents three-dimensional simulations of the interface behavior between cohesionless sand and a rigid wall of different roughness during wall friction tests. The study quantifies the effect of wall roughness on mobilized wall friction and shear localization, as well as the ratios between slip/rotation and shear stress/couple stress in the sand at the wall. The findings offer a new perspective on understanding the wall friction phenomenon in granular bodies.

Characterization of roughness and shear behavior of thermally treated granite fractures

Fanzhen Meng et al.

Summary: Despite various studies on the effects of high temperature on rock properties, this research focuses on the impact of high temperature on the frictional behavior of rough fractures in granite. The study found that heating affected the UCS, Vp, roughness, and shear behavior of the rock samples, with changes attributed to thermal expansion, water evaporation, and increased thermal cracks. Additionally, shear strength and post-peak stress drop were influenced by treatment temperatures above 300 degrees C.

Summary: Research on the shear behaviors of grouted soft rocks is important for understanding the reinforcement mechanism. Grouting significantly affects the strength and deformation characteristics of soft rocks, with changes in shear mode and increased residual shear strength. The study reveals the mechanism and proposes a strength model that can be helpful in practical applications of soft rock grouting.
