An eigenvalue stabilization technique to increase the robustness of the finite cell method for finite strain problems

Wadhah Garhuom et al.

Summary: This paper introduces an eigenvalue stabilization technique to address the high condition number issue in the finite cell method caused by broken cells, improving the robustness of large deformation analysis. By identifying and dealing with modes that lead to high condition numbers, additional stiffness is added to improve the condition number while maintaining the solution unchanged. The performance of this technique is demonstrated using various numerical examples.

Point cloud-based elastic reverse time migration for ultrasonic imaging of components with vertical surfaces

Jing Rao et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new ultrasonic imaging framework for non-destructive evaluation of components with vertical or steeply dipping surfaces, demonstrating its ability to accurately characterize multiple defects hidden in the interior of the component. The effectiveness and accuracy of the point cloud-based elastic reverse time migration approach is examined through experiments with extruded aluminum specimens. Results show accurate reconstruction of notches and side-drilled holes in components.

The finite cell method with least squares stabilized Nitsche boundary conditions

Karl Larsson et al.

Summary: This paper presents the application of the least squares stabilized symmetric Nitsche method for enforcement of Dirichlet boundary conditions to the finite cell method. The method, combined with finite cell stabilization, results in a symmetric positive definite stiffness matrix and relies solely on elementwise stabilization, without introducing additional filling. The paper provides a priori error estimates and bounds on the condition numbers.

Shape identification of scatterers Using a time-dependent adjoint method

Amit Sayag et al.

Summary: This paper deals with the inverse problem of accurately identifying the shape, size, and location of 2D objects or voids in a given medium via the measurement of waves scattered from them. It proposes an iterative method that minimizes the difference between measured wave signals and wave signals obtained in the presence of a candidate scatterer to find the closed curve representing the scatterer boundary. The performance of the method is demonstrated through numerical examples.

Moment fitted cut spectral elements for explicit analysis of guided wave propagation

Sergio Nicoli et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for simulating guided wave propagation in solids defined by implicit surfaces. The method uses structured grids of spectral elements and a fictitious domain approach to represent complex geometrical features. A novel moment fitting approach is introduced to restore the diagonal mass matrix property in elements intersected by interfaces, resulting in increased accuracy.

Development of Low-Frequency Phased Array for Imaging Defects in Concrete Structures

Yoshikazu Ohara et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the ultrasonic phased array imaging of crack-type defects using a low-frequency array transducer with a center frequency of hundreds of kHz. By optimizing the geometry of elements and using soft PZT material, the visualization of crack-type defects in concrete structures was successfully achieved, demonstrating the potential of the LF array transducer for crack-type defect inspection.

A tutorial on the adjoint method for inverse problems

Dan Givoli

Summary: This paper serves as a basic tutorial on the adjoint method for solving inverse problems in computational schemes. The method is presented in a slightly non-standard way, believed to be simpler and less abstract, yet equally general. It is applied at both continuous and discrete levels for steady-state and time-dependent problems, with various computational aspects discussed.
