Developing machine learning models for prediction of mortality in the medical intensive care unit

Beatriz Nistal-Nuno

Summary: This study compared the performance of three machine learning models with conventional severity-of-illness scoring systems in predicting mortality risk in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). The results showed that the machine learning models XGB and BN outperformed the conventional systems in terms of discrimination, calibration, and accuracy. The naive Bayes network model NB also showed better discrimination and accuracy compared to the conventional systems. Among all the models, the XGB model had the best performance.

Predicting 6-minute walking test outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease without physical performance measures

Daniel Romero et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel predictive model for assessing the functional exercise capacity of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and inferring disease severity. Using a Bayesian network, the model predicts the outcomes of the 6-min walk test and opens up possibilities for continuous monitoring and personalized care for COPD patients.

Network Analysis of Postoperative Surgical Complications in a Cohort of Children Reported to the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric

Ahmad N. Alzubaidi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationships between postoperative complications in children and found that children with multiple complications have a higher risk of death. Multiple complications were grouped into different clusters and were not independent from each other.

Early Identification of Trauma-induced Coagulopathy Development and Validation of a Multivariable Risk Prediction Model

Zane B. Perkins et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop and validate a risk prediction tool for trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) to support early therapeutic decision-making. A Bayesian Network (BN) prediction model accurately predicted high-risk patients with TIC, providing support for early, accurate, and efficient hemostatic resuscitation protocols.

Predicting Patient Deterioration: A Review of Tools in the Digital Hospital Setting

Kay D. Mann et al.

Summary: The review found that electronic medical records provide real-time data to help predict the deterioration risk of inpatients. However, despite some studies on prediction tools, it has not yet been demonstrated that the deployment of these algorithms is consistently associated with improvements in patient outcomes.

Failure to rescue: A quality indicator for postoperative care

Eric B. Rosero et al.

Summary: Postoperative complications can lead to mortality even with optimal perioperative care. Failure to rescue, where a patient dies after serious complications, has become a quality metric that explains mortality rate disparities among hospitals. The prevention of failure to rescue involves early recognition, rapid response, and timely escalation of care.
