Early diagnosis of bladder cancer by photoacoustic imaging of tumor-targeted gold nanorods

Elisa Alchera et al.

Summary: This study developed a new technological platform for visualizing small and flat urothelial lesions in high-grade bladder carcinoma. By targeting the overexpressed integrin alpha 581 receptor and using GNRs@Chit-Iso4 for delivery, selective recognition of bladder cancer cells and distribution of nanoparticles were achieved. Photoacoustic imaging successfully detected neoplastic lesions smaller than traditional ultrasound and bioluminescence imaging.

A nanoarchitecture of a gold cluster conjugated gold nanorod hybrid system and its application in fluorescence imaging and plasmonic photothermal therapy

Resmi Nair et al.

Summary: Engineering different nanomaterials into a single functional material can impart unique properties, especially in bio imaging and therapy. Gold nanomaterials, with their exceptional properties and non-toxicity, are strong candidates in the biomedical field. Designing a hybrid nanomaterial that retains the individual properties of the parent materials is challenging. In this study, a hybrid nanomaterial consisting of a small gold nanocluster and an asymmetric gold nanorod was synthesized, each having distinct optical properties for imaging and therapy. The formation and properties of the hybrid system depend on the synthesis route and parameters used. The efficacy of the hybrid material for targeted imaging and therapy was demonstrated in cell and animal models.

A numerical study to investigate the effects of tumour position on the treatment of bladder cancer in mice using gold nanorods assisted photothermal ablation

Jason K. K. Cheong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the efficacy of GNR-PTT in treating bladder cancer at different locations on the bladder in mice. Results showed that only tumors closest to the skin surface were effectively treated using GNR-PTT. The effectiveness of GNR-PTT in bladder cancer treatment depends on the tumor depth and the tissue type the laser passes through.
